We have gun laws, but in some places they are not being enforced

Contrary to popular belief, you can’t just walk into a gun store and buy a firearm like you would a loaf of bread. At a minimum, you fill out a federally mandated form and a phone call is made to (usually) state authorities to complete a background check.

Goodness grief: 21 H&K MP5s stolen from the Los Angeles PD

Unlike almost every other news story that mistakenly reports a “machine gun” was involved with some sort of crime, these guns really are machine guns; submachine guns to be specific. LAPD housed these weapons in a facility with no alarms or security cameras.

Five South Dakota lawmakers have introduced legislation that would require any adult 21 or older to buy a firearm “sufficient to provide for their ordinary self-defense.”

Obviously this is not going to (or even meant to) pass. This proposed South Dakota bill emphasizes that setting a precedent of mandated purchases is dangerous!  Even if you think that mandating health care is a good idea I am sure you can connect the dots with this metaphorical legislation and recognize that this notion of mandated purchases is a poor one.
