RVO housekeeping: Stories from a DNS migration
What the heck happened? Well, we moved the site to a new host about 24 hours ago and since navigating the world of DNS changes is not an easy one for the expert – it does not come with a step-by-step guide – novices are lucky to keep their heads above water.
Not going to tell the story, primarily since my notes as to what I did and what I failed to do are a disaster. I started this on a slow day (Sunday) hoping it would be completed overnight for the start of the radio show and it did not happen. Figured today would be a slightly slow day due to the holiday, so we had some extra time and we ended up taking every bit of it.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
All of that said, the site should perform better now. We’ll see how it goes!
Okay, I’ll admit it:? while I did a fair amount of complaining (because this was my only day off from school this week thanks to the holiday), I managed to muddle through and wonder how the 6 people who were in the chatroom managed to get into the chatroom while I and others could not.
I’m sure it was a ridiculously huge undertaking & thank you for your efforts.? Does this mean that chatroll will cease to be “chunky” and will run more efficiently with the increased server size?
Thanks for everything…still love the site.
The move will not improve Chatroll at all, since it is an externally provided service. I’ve always said, if someone has an alternative to Chatroll – that meets our business requirements – I’m listening!
Steve, I give A LOT of credit for doing this move, which is NOT EASY from what I have read. I could not today get in at all to the SOC Chatroom, but neither could Jim either to his own chatroom, so I was only able to listen in. I have learned from today that working with high tech is never easy.
ugh….keep forgetting about chatroll being external.? it serves the purpose.? 🙂
Everything has worked perfectly for me, but that might be because of my superior OS and user savvy. Good luck with the transition.
Everything worked fine for me, too. Thought chatroll was acting up when there were only 6 in the chatroom. Thanks, Steve, for all your hard work to keep this website working at an optimum level, and thanks for your always interesting posts.
Don’t feel bad Steve.? A couple of weeks ago, I was going through some of my old 3 1/2 ” floppy disks.? I thought to myself, “what the heck am I holding on to these for, I don’t even have a computer with a floppy drive!”
?
Note to anyone under 15 years old: floppy disks were these plastic things the size of a slice of American cheese that, today, could not even hold a picture that you take with your cellphone.
?
Gotta love technology!
