Open Thread: Supreme Court Obamacare decision

So now it’s a tax, and you have to pay. Supreme Court upholds health care law.

Since the show is called Sound Off Connecticut … you may as well sound off below. If you’re not from Connecticut, you’re welcome to chime in. Maybe I’ll write something later if I have time, but I’m hoping the Sound Off Sister will join with a new post.

Well if it is a TAX that means that it has to be part of the Federal Budget process…this administration has not passed a budget in 3 years….

With a House controled by?Republicans, a Senate controled by Democrats, the only thing that can happen now is a STALEMATE….

Again this is a big loss for Obama….

2012 the republcans take control of the both the house, senate and white house, an ObamaCare gets repealed and the final nail is plunged deep into the coffin ? ? ?

Considering Zero’s slurs against the Supreme Court, might this just be a “Be careful what you ask for; you might get it!” moment?

Sound Off Portugal here (ok, just call me “sop-py”).? Know that health care need(ed) reform, but didn’t think this was the time, economically, or the way to do it.?? Why on earth didn’t they first just remove health insurers’ monopolies from the individual states so there was an open market to bring the costs down?? And then go slowly, as?economics permitted????A 2,000+ page of mind-boggling jargon that most of congress didn’t even bother to read sounds like a recipe for corruption-disaster.? ?Just hope you don’t go the way of Europe (although that transatlantic ship may have sailed – think Titanic).????Most European countries have to sustain their health care with huge taxation.?

From a personal point of view, what happens if you’re a citizen, but?not living in the States yet pay taxes there?? No US provider will insure an ex-pat.?? Inquiring minds….

This is not a free country.

    • Lynn on June 28, 2012 at 4:37 pm

No, it will be an expensive country.

Nancy Pelosi said we had to pass the bill to find out what’s in it.? Actually, we are all going to find out as it is implemented, and it’s not going to be pretty.? The government will receive money through the new ‘tax’ that it just levied and regulate the?money needed to pay??for our medications, tests, hospitalizations and doctors.? The government will be the determiner of who gets what and how much.? They’ve done such a swell job in other areas, right? Ask anyone on Medicaid what kind of access they have to specialists and specialized care.???Our health care?delivery system is in dire?need of reform, getting the government involved in this way is not the answer.? It will?only compound the problems?which will then?force real reform to?happen. Unfortunately, ?the price we will all pay will be steep, our collective quality of life will take a real hit here.

That actions being seen here are clearly those directed at controlling the people; we have today lost another freedom; the freedom of choice, for life, limb and wellness.? No one disabled, chronically ill, or mentally ill will have any direct choice for their care and will be ‘ taken care of’ as seen fit by the panel. Insurance companies already being dictated to, shall be completely controlled by the government.?
With a Supreme Court upholding a law that is Un-Constitutional, according to every Constitutional scholar, blatantly screams ‘we are not for the people but for the dictatorship; do not abide by or uphold the ex-Supreme law of this nation but abide by and uphold the law of the Hill. ‘? Did anyone else hear that?
We can either cry we are doomed or we can fight for what we had and get it back. This next election shall either put us into years of oppression under a direct dictatorship until a revolution occurs or we find ourselves at the beginning of a long road and journey to get back, restore and re institute our Constitution as Supreme Law.
At Jesicha’s Hope being prepared for the long journey we can only continue to help those in need, through channels to outside [U.S.] medical care;…

We have not lost another freedom, we have lost all our freedoms. The government can now force us to do anything or pay a tax. We all know the penalties for not paying a tax. The government sets the tax rate. If enough people pay the tax and the government does not get the results they wanted, they just keep raising the tax until you comply or end up penniless and in jail.

A?sad day, the end of the USA and freedom.??

    • stinkfoot on June 28, 2012 at 6:01 pm

That sums it up pretty well.
      ?
      ?
      ?
This is the same administration that has gun walked weapons into criminal hands across the Mexican border in hopes that a weapon sold int he US will be traced to a crime and one was- to a murder.? The objective- to justify limiting our second amendment freedom on the premise that we cannot responsibly handle guns.
      ?
      ?
      ?
The point being that this is not a government that has the slightest level of concern for you or me so the premise that they want health care to be affordable can be dismissed.? It is a power grab and a money grab.? As much as there’s still hope in November I don’t have much faith that a Romney win will translate to a repeal of this.
      ?
      ?
      ?
That this administration is not awash in Watergate grade administration destroying scandal for being an accessory to the murder of Brian Terry.? Of course the lap dog media can be thanked in part for that.
      ?
      ?
      ?
The SCOTUS just gave the American people the middle finger.
      ?

    • stinkfoot on June 28, 2012 at 8:43 pm

      Correction:
      ?
…this administration is NOW awash in… scandal.
      ?
that is all- nothing else to see here… shouldn’t we all be expending our personal budgets of outrage on some athlete who isn’t conducting him/herself? while our government performs the economic equivalent of forced rectal sodomy on the American working poor?
      ?
Surely there’s some news tidbit about a child molester out there that can distract us from the fact that the US supreme court just treated the constitution like toilet paper.

Romney couldn’t run on the “Economy” alone.? By Roberts approving the Health Care Reform it has exposed the Bill as a Tax.? Justice Roberts claims that the courts “don’t exist to legislate, but to interpret and judge constitutionality.”? The penalty for not having insurance is in essence a TAX and Justice Roberts then places the burden back on the legislature stating that “elected officials have the authority to make laws and the people have the opportunity to throw those elected officials out of office.”
Short story, the People of the USA who “do not agree” with their elected officials should participate in electing officials that favour their views and virtues in Federalism.??
I think Justice Roberts is the Trojan Horse exposing something that has been unsettling in the USA for decades now …you GET what YOU VOTE for in government.

    • stinkfoot on June 28, 2012 at 8:45 pm

Yes, we get what we vote for though all too often that doesn’t become universally obvious until it’s too late to do anything about it.

  10. Anybody but Obama on June 28, 2012 at 8:47 pm

after saying healthcare wouldn’t be a tax increase on the middle class,? today we find out its a? 1.7 trillion dollar increase on the middle class

This is economic dictatorship and un-American.

  12. phil on June 30, 2012 at 7:54 am

So, if it’s a tax, why did the Court hear the case?? Tax hasn’t been implemented yet.? “There are no rules around here; we’re trying to get something done.”

  13. yeah on June 30, 2012 at 11:29 am

Roberts defined judicial activism right there.? Partisan hack job to hand the Rs an easy win in Nov, and expand the government’s power at the same time, while paying minor lip service to sanity in having a correct decision on CC.
Nevermind that the tax and spend didnt originate in the house where it should have…
Makes one wonder if we are a republic any longer.? TPTB just do whatever the hell they want, laws be damned, and they can make a hundred thousand more laws for us little folk that have no recourse.? BS.

  14. sammy22 on June 30, 2012 at 11:35 am

The suit was brought claiming that the individual mandate was unconstitutional. SCOTUS has spoken: the individual mandate is constitutional (end of story).

  15. Lynn on June 30, 2012 at 5:37 pm

If you say it is the end of the story, it will be for you.?

  16. sammy22 on June 30, 2012 at 6:16 pm

There will be other and different stories. The constitutionality of the individual mandate has been affirmed, or are still in denial?

    • Lynn on June 30, 2012 at 8:37 pm

      I agree there will be?
Many, many more stories. This will be an incredibly important time in our country. Can we defend our constitution the way our forefathers and foremothers did? Or do we just sit back and shrug. I think Scotus did it’s job, now it’s time for us.

Good article on Catastrophic insurance logic.
    ?
What the PPACA effectively says is that regardless of the size of your house or value of your car, insurers can only charge you X. That is okay, according to the logic of the PPACA, because we will have all these other people with cheaper cars or smaller houses buy insurance and pay more than they should based on their risk to subsidize your expensive car or house. This clearly is not actuarially fair nor is it the practice with auto or homeowners policies. Such unfair pricing would naturally result in the low risk (small car and house folks) not buying insurance policies. That is why the PPACA needs the individual mandate.
