Whale saves drowning diver? Don’t think so…

In FoxNews.com’s Features and Faces section, they have the story of a swimmer in a tank being saved by a beluga whale somewhere in northeast China. I’m going to say “set up.”

Why do I think (in my opinion) the woman brush with beluga-whale compassion is fake? She’s wearing what looks to be a pretty thick (5mm or so) wet suit and no weight to hold her underwater in the tank.

From FoxNews.com

A beluga whale saved a drowning diver by hoisting her to the surface, carrying her leg in its mouth.

Terrified Yang Yun thought she was going to die when her legs were paralyzed by crippling cramps in arctic temperatures. Competitors had to sink to the bottom of an aquarium’s 20-foot arctic pool and stay there for as long as possible with the beluga whales at Polar Land in Harbin, north east China.

Here are the photos. Note no weights to offset the positive buoyancy of the wetsuit. She probably used a good deal of effort to get to the bottom of the pool, but as soon as she stopped swimming down, my guess is the suit was already in the process of bringing her back to the surface.

A 5mm full suit – even only a 3mm suit – has quite a bit of buoyancy.

I’m going to go out on a limb and speculate the pool was not 20 feet to the bottom either.

If a video exists showing a full 60 seconds prior to the event, along with the event itself, I’d like to see it.

Why did I post this? Well, I really have no idea.
