University pays Michelle Obama $63k for… nothing?

Maybe it was a deferred bonus? Michelle Obama was paid $62,709 in 2008 by the University of Chicago Hospitals as vice president of community and external affairs. The information that is causing a small stir today is that she has not worked for the University since May of 2007.

From the Washington Post on May 11, 2007. Hat tip to Sweetness and Light.

When she finally winds down her duties as vice president of community and external affairs at the University of Chicago Hospitals in the days ahead (she was promoted to the position soon after her husband joined the Senate), she said, it “will be the first time that I haven’t gotten up and gone to a job.”

Then, we have the 2008 Obama family tax information released yesterday.

[President] Obama earned $139,204 as a Democratic senator from Illinois last year before leaving his seat after winning the November election. Michelle Obama received a salary of $62,709 from the University of Chicago Hospitals, where she was an executive.

It seems as though the first lady was on a leave of absence since her departure from the University in late May 2007, but I’m not quite getting how she got almost $63,000 in salary from the University in 2008.

ha, what did the older woman say to Meg Ryan in the scene of "When Harry Met Sally" classic?  I'll have what she's having.  It just seems the be what is on the menu these days.  Whatever you can get … take it.

Considering the recent figures on their tax forms, she really needed the money!  Note also the track record of their charitable giving.  What money grubbers!

    I could do that job!

Actually, wasn't the hospital paying her in excess of $300K for the exact same thing when she actually showed up at the office?

They were doing so, Dimsdale, in a position soooooooo crucial that they opted not to refill the position after the election…

I guess they figured that Mrs. Burris couldn't do nothing as gracefully as Mrs. Obama…
