History matters: The “federal government” did not end slavery

By Steve McGough / December 6, 2012 /

Let me introduce you to Florida Senate Minority Leader Chris Smith. While speaking to a TEA Party group, Smith claimed the founders wrote into the U.S. Constitution that he “wasn’t a man.” Smith is African American and he oversimplifies the issue by 100 fold.

Ginsburg: Don’t look to US Constitution … it’s not a good model for government

By Steve McGough / February 6, 2012 /

Not only does Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg think the Supreme Court and state courts should look to the laws of other countries as a guide when making decisions, she also would not suggest looking to the United States Constitution as a model for newly established governments in 2012.

Obama wants to bypass the will of the people (Congress)

By Steve McGough / September 15, 2011 /

The United States Constitution and our founding fathers stipulated the people are represented in our federal government by our elected representatives in Congress. President Obama would rather circumvent Congress since it’s not controlled by Democrats.

What more can Obama and the government do?

By Steve McGough / August 5, 2011 /

That is the question being asked by the media today. The dead-tree version of the Hartford Courant had this same question within the first couple of paragraphs of their above-the-fold front page article this morning. I used to say the government does not have to do something, but now they need to undo what they…

Dead Man Walking…

By Dave in EH / December 30, 2009 /

By Steve McGough / August 4, 2009 /

I guess I’m smarter than a 5th grader. Or at least I’m smarter than a professor emeritus of medicine and social medicine at Harvard Medical School and former editor in chief of the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Arnold Relman might know plenty about health care, but nothing about health care economics.

Williams helps us understand the Constitution

By Steve McGough / September 17, 2008 / Comments Off on Williams helps us understand the Constitution

This week he reminds readers that Congress – primarily the people’s house – runs the government including generating tax revenue and determining spending allocations. As the media and many politicians completely ignore the founding documents, over time they become…

Why all the fuss about reading the US Constitution yesterday?

By Steve McGough / January 7, 2011 /

Really now. What’s the problem with taking less than one hour on the House floor to read one of our founding documents? It’s not like we’re asking members of Congress to read the 2,500 page health care reform legislation or anything…

We do not need another “Contract with America”

By Steve McGough / September 22, 2010 /

We really don’t. The previous one was OK I guess, but as a conservative, I figured the United States Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the following Amendments make a pretty good contract. Heck, the congress-critters even swear an oath to support and defend it.
