How $15 co-pays destroyed the health care system

By Steve McGough / December 29, 2009 /

I’m struggling with the headline since I know health care has not been destroyed by low co-pays, but those gold-plated plans with $15 co-pays to go see a doctor and $25 for an emergency room visit have destroyed our perception of value when it comes to health care.

Why isn’t the Baucus health care bill “affordable” Update: Video – Hatch Details Taxes

By SoundOffSister / September 17, 2009 /

Update (Jim): Senator Orrin Hatch details the taxes that the Baucus bill will impose. I think it dovetails nicely with the SOS post. Plus hatch sounds so pained. I feel his pain and so will you. Video at the bottom. (SOS): The first thing that struck me about the health care bill proposed by Sen.…

Free products and services equal unlimited demand

By Steve McGough / October 17, 2008 / Comments Off on Free products and services equal unlimited demand

I’ve been meaning to write a post concerning “free” goods and services. What happens when the government – or any other group – comes in and offers something for a very low cost or free? I’ve found three events that will show us what happens when you offer stuff for free or at super-low cost,…

Info you should know: Retirement facility staff won’t help if residents have emergency

By Steve McGough / March 4, 2013 /

I’ve fallen, and I can’t get up! There is a story in the SF Gate about a nurse at a retirement facility who would not preform CPR on a resident who collapsed and had a heart attack. This is not something new, but standard policy for many facilities.

Obama administration threatens insurers

By SoundOffSister / September 10, 2010 /

Steve did a post earlier this week about the rise in insurance premiums that consumers are now seeing.  The insurance companies have said that anywhere from 1% to 9% of those increases are the direct result of Obamacare mandates, with the rest of any increases attributable to rising health care costs. Yesterday, the Obama administration struck…

What is a “qualified” plan?

By SoundOffSister / March 27, 2010 /

As you know, beginning in 2014, all individuals must have a “qualified” insurance plan, or pay a tax. Congressman Weiner’s protestations to the contrary notwithstanding, that tax will be enforced by the Internal Revenue Service as the tax imposed “shall be included in a taxpayer’s return”.  And, we all know who enforces information on tax…

Obama continues attack on health care insurance companies

By Steve McGough / March 25, 2010 /

I guess he did not read my post last week. I put a lot of effort into it, you’d think the president would have at least had someone on the staff review it.

Obama suggests employer health care premiums will drop 3,000% – UPDATE: Heckled?

By Steve McGough / March 16, 2010 /

Three-thousand percent … 3,000% … Wow! Look, he probably misspoke in some way or TOTUS played another trick on the president yesterday, but it would be impossible to drop employer premiums by 3,000 percent, at least those of us who passed 6th grade math know that much. UPDATE below. Was he heckled?

Obamacare: Senate bill limits summary of benefits to four pages

By SoundOffSister / November 22, 2009 /

Sadly, there is no such page limit on any version of Obamacare drafted by Congress. Sen. Reid’s (D-Nev.) version of Obamacare, however, does mandate a page limit for insurance companies, and it should prove quite interesting in its implementation.

The real cost of Obamacare

By SoundOffSister / October 28, 2009 /

Whether you have your own health insurance, or, have your health insurance through your small business employer, get ready to pay a great deal more for that insurance should Obamacare become law. For the past five months I have posted many articles about provisions of the proposed Obamacare legislation that will clearly cost you money.  But, to date,…
