Shep Smith calls out Shannon Bream and Fox News? Update

Here’s the Shep Smith/Shannon Bream video in context, per Hot Air’s request. Not sure it makes a difference. It starts with Shep revisiting the McDonnell Thesis and why oh why the Deeds attacks didn’t work (old news?) with Carl Cameron. Carl explains … well Shep, its the economy silly.

Shep moves on to Shannon Bream who is at an event with Chris Christie, the Republican running in New Jersey. The money stuff is about one minute from the end where Shep jumps ugly on Shannon for not having Corzine too. Catch the look on Shannon’s face, as if to say … you know damn well why I’m here … you guys put me here.

My take, as a reporter for more than 20 years: it’s not unreasonable on a live shot to put a reporter in a place where the candidate is (Carl was with Deeds), especially if Corzine declined offers. This is on Corzine not Shannon Bream … Shep was out of line. Period. UNLESS … Bream and Shep have locked horns once before behind the scenes. Oh no … trouble in paradise?

Update: To those who have asked … of course Shep is still my favorite news anchor. There is no other Shep Smith. I know where he was going with this, I just object to him doing it on air to a colleague.

Lemar Alexander with Cavuto: Obama Nixonian

Well he’s not the first. Krauthammer and Rove said the same thing right here. But this is a Senator who’s been there and seen that so it carries a little more weight. I agree with Rush. I think this does nothing. This doesn’t even give Obama a tingle.

The object of the game is the same. Isolate your opponent, define and destroy, which any good psychologist will tell you, is very typical anti-social behavior. Actually now that I think about it, typical anti-social behavior is to befriend someone. Then when they are no longer useful, devalue that friend  (trash them among other friends), then discard them (umm, usually figuratively). But we know this group has never done that … right Reverend Wright, Docs, Wall Street, Chamber of Commerce, et al?

But no worries … only 3% of all anti-socials are really, really dangerous. That’s the good news. Do ya feel lucky? Well do ya?

More Obama administration threats – Networks. Must. Drink. Kool Aid.

Just one year ago, could you envision the Executive Branch of the United States government actively going out and telling major news networks they better not do what Fox News is doing or you’ll regret it? What is the Obama administration going to do? Pull a Hugo Chavez and shut them down by edict?

We poke fun now and then but he is our President and he has the legislative majorioty to do what he wants. But that doesn’t mean we who oppose those plans  should not push back. Witness the Tea Parties. Read more

About those guns coming from the US, umm, never mind

I discussed this on the show, after the Secretary of State made the claim that 90 percent of the guns being used by the drug cartel in Mexico come from the US. And yet they are recovering weapons that can’t be sold in the US. So how could this be?

Watch and listen to this Fox exclusive. It’s clear, at least to me and I hope Steve will add to this post, that the Democrats were hoping to use this to clamp down on gun ownership in the US. But that’s just me.

Here’s a post by Glenn Reynolds … the first person I know to catch the discrepancy.

So all this talk about U.S. gun shops arming Mexican gangs with bazookas was just gun-control propaganda, then?

Call me paranoid, but I am glad Fox jumped on this early … or is it already too late? Or does it even matter with this crowd in DC? Comments welcome.

Update: (Steve) … Malkin points us over to the Fox News exclusive as well, so maybe these lies and myths have a chance of being squashed, but honestly, this is exactly how the anti-gun crowd operates. They deal with conjecture and feelings all the time; since Mexico is a poor country, they certainly are not responsible for their actions. Plus, it always needs to be about the big bad Americans and their negative influence on poor countries.

Kind of reminds me of the drive by media.

Here’s an excerpt from the Fox News exclusive, which is a must read since it provides detailed information about the number of weapons traced, where they come from, and where they do not come from.

There’s just one problem with the 90 percent “statistic” and it’s a big one:

It’s just not true.

In fact, it’s not even close. The fact is, only 17 percent of guns found at Mexican crime scenes have been traced to the U.S.

What’s true, an ATF spokeswoman told, in a clarification of the statistic used by her own agency’s assistant director, “is that over 90 percent of the traced firearms originate from the U.S.”

But a large percentage of the guns recovered in Mexico do not get sent back to the U.S. for tracing, because it is obvious from their markings that they do not come from the U.S.

“Not every weapon seized in Mexico has a serial number on it that would make it traceable, and the U.S. effort to trace weapons really only extends to weapons that have been in the U.S. market,” Matt Allen, special agent of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), told FOX News.

Hot Air is now on topic, as is Gateway Pundit. Ed Morrissey does ask the question – why lie?

So why make up the lie? The more conspiratorial will conclude that the Obama administration wants to have a pretext for seizing weapons. Public statements like those made by Hillary Clinton certainly put pressure on the US to take some sort of action, if we’re admitting to being the problem. So far, the Obama administration has not proposed a solution to this mythical problem, but we will want to keep a very close eye when they do.

We’ll, maybe they didn’t lie, the administration just hears what they want to hear and passes it along. That way, if the 90 percent figure goes viral and everyone believes it – they can pass more restrictive gun legislation.

If they get caught – just like all of the administration tax cheats – it just becomes a clerical error that is really no big deal.

They Did It … Update – Bill Congress for commercials

Talk about Mr Smith goes to Washington. Shep Smith jumped ugly on Congress … and Chris Dodd. It is an amazing performance and worth watching for sure. Enjoy.

Video now up  … sorry about the delay. New software today, still working out the kinks.

He went on to call today’s hearing into the AIG bonuses before the House Financial Services subcommittee a distraction and suggested that Fox bill Congress for all of the needlessly lost commercial time covering the hearings live.

It’s a distraction only if you lose sight of the big picture but well worth reporting, at least the way Shep did today. As we have been saying for two days … Congress is at the heart of this whole bonus boondoggle and the meltdown of Wall Street as well.

Update: Here’s the video of Shep condensing the AIG hearings down to a complete distraction from the banking crisis … and Fox News … “Fox should bill congress.” Enjoy.

Fox Opinion Poll: Halo Slipping?

Latest Fox Opinion poll is out and while I hate polls … this is worth at least a mention.

First the country is split 50/50 on the stimulus package and whether it will work … but the vast majority are convinced it won’t help them personally. There’s a shock. It’s not meant to help most people. Here are the results on that.

For those supporting the stimulus bill, the top reason is because it was seen as the best option and we “have to do something” (37 percent). Other main reasons include the spending included in the bill (17 percent), belief in Barack Obama and the Democrats (14 percent), and simple belief the plan will work (11 percent).

Too much pork — that’s what opponents say is the primary reason they dislike the plan. A third of opponents (32 percent) say pork is the problem.

We had to do something? That’s reason to support a plan you basically disagree with? Oh well.

Popularity still strong from slipping … but almost all from the Republicans who had hoped he meant change … real change … real bipartisan change. Poll results on the Fox site now  … but here’s their pollster to wet your apptite.

Poll analyst attributes it to the public dissatisfaction with the stimulus … and Obama’s partisan tone? Yikes. Maybe comments like this didn’t help.

More proof Democrats let financial crisis happen

For those of you not paying attention, during the past 72 hours the financial crisis has been clearly explained more than a few times, and now the main stream media is catching up. Jim Angle – Fox News contributor – has a great video report that sums up the crisis again. The truth will be told.

Author note: While I’m away from the computer, I’m republishing my top 20 posts from 2008 each afternoon. -Steve

Jim Vicevich covered this tonight, Hot Air is on top of it too.

Malkin is covering the FBI getting involved, and Gingrich is calling to kill the bailout bill.

Don’t forget to review my post yesterday, which links to Kevin Hassett’s commentary on that is simple and clear for all to understand.

There is no excuse for you to fade off on this subject, thinking it is too hard for you to understand. Especially if you’re considering voting for Democrats this election season.

Get out and vote – put conservative Republicans back in power.

Quick note: commenter lynda over at Vicevich’s show tonight had a good one. “Jim Angel better have someone taste his food from now on.”

What Color Is The Sky In Blagoland

Well you will just have to watch the video to see. This is today’s Shep Smith moment and goes right into the Hall Of Fame vault. Yesterday Fox News covered the Blogjevich press conference live and as the Blagoisms began to pile up … Shep Smith decides enough is enough.

BONUS Video: There’s a great Chris Wallace line at the end too.

A Special Moment – Update: Juan and the Obama Critics

UPDATE: Don’t be fooled by this very touching moment by Juan Williams … both sincere and from the heart. As Williams points out in his WSJ OP Ed post below the video … to be moved by the moment is appropriate … but being moved by the moment into silence is not. WSJ piece below video.

This is a must watch. Juan Williams commenting not on Obama’s speech … but Reverend Lowrey. I make my views on the Lowrey prayer here. But Juan as a man of color, clearly never saw this day coming, never thought it possible, so Lowrey’s prayer touches him in a way it could not me. But what Williams had to say did touch my heart. My God Bless him and you just can’t help feeling happy for him.

Update: Now read this from the WSJ where Williams makes the case that to be truly post racial … of the kind that so moved him yesterday, Obama needs to face his critics like any other President … and critics must not be labeled racists in doing so.

If his presidency is to represent the full power of the idea that black Americans are just like everyone else — fully human and fully capable of intellect, courage and patriotism — then Barack Obama has to be subject to the same rough and tumble of political criticism experienced by his predecessors. To treat the first black president as if he is a fragile flower is certain to hobble him. It is also to waste a tremendous opportunity for improving race relations by doing away with stereotypes and seeing the potential in all Americans.

Yet there is fear, especially among black people, that criticism of him or any of his failures might be twisted into evidence that people of color cannot effectively lead. That amounts to wasting time and energy reacting to hateful stereotypes. It also leads to treating all criticism of Mr. Obama, whether legitimate, wrong-headed or even mean-spirited, as racist.

This is patronizing. Worse, it carries an implicit presumption of inferiority. Every American president must be held to the highest standard. No president of any color should be given a free pass for screw-ups, lies or failure to keep a promise.
