Biden won’t let Obama take his guns – or ours

My first thought when I heard about Biden’s statement concerning firearm ownership was – I’ll bet my last dollar he was not in San Fransisco, Seattle, Chicago or New York. No way. Biden stated, “I guarantee you Barack Obama ain’t taking my shotguns, so don’t buy that malarkey.”

Biden spoke at the United Mine Workers of America’s annual fish fry in Castlewood, Virginia, just about as far away from Washington D.C. you can get while still staying in the state. Both the NRA and the Gun Owners of America give Biden and Obama F ratings.

These guys change their tune depending on who they are speaking to. If they are in front of an audience of hunters – your gun rights are safe. When in front of a packed hall of community organizers in a city, it’s all about regulation, keeping illegal guns off the street, purchase limits, cartridge stamping and no-carry restrictions.

So where is Obama on the topic of gun ownership? Officially, it looks like he’s not providing us any information on the subject. The Obama campaign site does not have a 2nd Amendment page in the Issues category. Nada. Zip.

Biden basically said that the NRA and GOA are nuts. No way will Obama take away our guns. The campaign’s plan is to laugh off the assumption that the Democrat ticket will take away guns, but limit comments on the subject exclusively to hunting firearms.

Biden also used a manufacture name – Beretta – which is normally linked to semi-automatic pistols for those who are less familiar with the industry. That was a neat political trick if you ask me. When people hear Beretta, they think pistols – not shotguns.

They have been quiet on concealed carry for self defense and the fact that gun-free zones do not work. They insist that local restrictions on ownership is completely legal.

From Jake Tapper and Matt Jaffe at the ABC Political Punch blog.

Sen. Barack Obama better not mess with his running mate Joe Biden’s guns…or else.

In an out-of-nowhere attempt to re-assure a southwestern Virginia labor crowd about gun owners’ rights, Biden — who regularly scores “F” ratings from the National Rifle Association — warned Obama that if “he tries to fool with my Beretta, he’s got a problem.”

“I guarantee you Barack Obama ain’t taking my shotguns, so don’t buy that malarkey,” Biden said Saturday at the United Mine Workers of America’s annual fish fry in Castlewood, Virginia. “Don’t buy that malarkey. They’re going to start peddling that to you.”

Biden told the crowd that he himself is a gun owner. “I got two,” Biden said, “if he tries to fool with my Beretta, he’s got a problem. I like that little over and under, you know? I’m not bad with it. So give me a break. Give me a break.”

Yeah, give me a break.

Hot Air has commentary and ties it to the news the Obama camp quickly agreed to shorter Q&A periods during the VP debate.

Would The One dare to fool with his Beretta? Of course not — he doesn’t have the votes. Golly, I wonder if this explains why Team Barry was so quick to acquiesce to McCain’s demand for ahighly structured VP debate format with short Q&A periods so that the candidates can’t ramble on.

Certainly, it is possible the Obama camp has realized they need to put a tighter leash on the vice presidential candidate.

Back to the topic at hand. What is Obama’s record? In early April, he clearly stated he was against concealed carry. From Amanda Carpenter’s article on TownHall.com.

“I am not in favor of concealed weapons,” Obama told the Pittsburgh Tribune. “I think that creates a potential atmosphere where more innocent people could (get shot during) altercations.”

Outrageous position. That puts law-abiding citizens at a disadvantage. Criminals don’t care and will commit robberies with the comfort of knowing that nobody can be legally carrying to defend themselves. It’s been proven for years, states that pass concealed carry legislation is good for the community and bad for the criminals.

By no means am I stating that everyone should carry a pistol for self defense. But if you want the option – and are properly trained and pass the normal background check – you should be able to carry. Period.

Criminals go elsewhere when they know law-abiding citizens carry defensive weapons and are trained to use them.

I’ve got 13 posts that are in my 2nd Amendment category, including my original post dated right after Obama’s interview with the Tribune.

The Democrat ticket will not protect your 2nd Amendment rights.

Hey, see-dubya is temporarily back posting at Malkin’s site on this subject too. Note the pictures of Kerry – finger on the trigger, no eye protection, no ear protection. Idiot.

Concealed Carry Works – Obama Ignores Facts

The state of Michigan recently celebrated an anniversary. Six years ago state legislature passed, and the governor signed, a new law that effectively made Michigan a shall-issue state when it comes to right-to-carry. Those opposed to concealed carry in Michigan were distressed, convinced that additional weapons would result in more armed robberies, innocent people getting shot and an increase in the suicide rate.

So, if you were against concealed carry in Michigan six years ago and claimed the sky would fall; but crime and suicide rates went down after the law went into effect, what would you do? If you’re Barack Obama and running for president, you ignore the facts and tell people you think concealed carry is a bad idea because more innocent people could get shot during altercations. Doesn’t that feel good…

Second Amendment advocates do not insist that everyone be armed at all times, but they do insist that citizens have the right to protect themselves, their family and home, and have the option to carry a weapon.

Those who choose to carry in one of 42 states that permit concealed weapons generally go through required background checks and training. Vermont and Alaska trust their citizens so much that they simply require the mandated federal background check to purchase a pistol. No additional checks or training are required to carry your pistol – goodness grief!

So what did happen in Michigan? Prior to the laws, only 25,000 residents were permitted to carry. After six years, more than 155,00 residents of the state have a permit. That number does not include residents of other states who are allowed to carry in Michigan. Although you need to conform to normal Michigan law, the state offers full reciprocity for residents in other states that have a permit. In other words if you have a pistol permit in Connecticut, you can carry in Michigan.

So did gun crimes increase six-fold? Nope. Overall, the violent crime rate and suicide rate went down.

Over at Malkin’s site, see-dubya has more. So does Hot Air, and Amanda Carpenter has a piece today on Townhall. So yes, there are a lot of conservative writers posting today about this issue. It’s important!

Obama’s most recent comments concerning concealed carry come from an interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune Review just yesterday.

Rather than create a national registry, “I do think we have to do a better job sharing information between local and federal officials,” Obama said yesterday. He differs with McCain and Clinton about whether people should be allowed to carry concealed guns. Clinton and McCain oppose outlawing it.

“I am not in favor of concealed weapons,” Obama said. “I think that creates a potential atmosphere where more innocent people could (get shot during) altercations.”

Obama’s position can not be ignored, and someone needs to go tell him that there are no Wild West shootouts happening in the streets of states that support your Second Amendment rights, even in those crazy states – Vermont or Alaska – that don’t regulate concealed carry.

Department of Interior updates regulations to allow concealed carry

I wrote this post for Radio Vice Online, and am crossposting here. …

Maybe we should include a feature called “Second Amendment Tuesday” here on the blog and the radio show. There are quite a few stories that have popped up during the last couple of weeks concerning boisterous buying at our local Second Amendment shops, but here are a couple of stories that have been below the fold and under the radar; and one from a commentator who’s plain wrong. UK think tank thinking… If we all carried a gun

I do not advocate everyone carry a self defense weapon. Some may be more comfortable carrying than others, some have time to train, others do not. One thing is for certain, states and cities that allow citizens to carry self defense weapons do have less crime for the simple fact that criminals prefer target rich environments and victims who have fewer options to protect themselves and their family.

Richard Munday over at the Times Online (UK) has a comment piece that discusses the Mumbai attack that killed or wounded 500, along with historical examples from Britain and the United States concerning the right to carry.

Chicago Considers 500 Homicides per Year Acceptable

Can Chicago residents defend themselves? You’re welcome to run and hide, move out of the city, or just hope you don’t become a victim, but the city has basically banned handgun ownership and does not allow concealed carry permits. The state is a bit more lenient, but there is no state preemption of local laws.

Obama Re-Aims for Pro-Gun Vote – Won’t Work

Nice try, but Carrie Budoff Brown’s spin at Politico is not going to cut it with 2nd Amendment advocates and NRA members. For the last few days, Conservative247’s featured post informed readers of Obama’s clear position against concealed carry laws. Since his interview in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review on April 2, I’ve been waiting to see what the campaign’s response would be.

Despite the fact that concealed carry laws do not result in Wild-West shootouts – or more crime for that matter – Obama is on the record stating that he does not think citizens should be allowed to carry concealed. When I read about “A-rated” NRA Democrat congressmen in Pennsylvania and leaders at the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence agreeing that Obama is a quality supporter of the 2nd Amendment, something is wrong; very wrong.
