Amateur’s take on McDonald Second Amendment arguments

By Steve McGough / March 2, 2010 /

I enjoyed listening to the audio of the Heller arguments but unfortunately, they did not release any audio for today’s arguments. This afternoon I posted the full text of the oral arguments within a few minutes of being released and I’ve taken the time to read through the 77 pages during some free time tonight.

O’Reilly on guns – disarm citizens during states of emergency – UPDATE – O’Reilly to left of Obama

By Steve McGough / February 19, 2010 /

Last night on O’Reilly during an interview with Oathkeepers founder Stewart Rhodes, Bill made a fool of himself suggesting it was “extreme” for Rhodes to think it was unconstitutional to disarm law-abiding citizens during a state of emergency.

Broad wellness program provision in health care bill raises questions

By Steve McGough / November 24, 2009 /

Just what is a wellness program and how far would government regulators take such a program to promote health or prevent disease? Second Amendment advocates have read the language in HR 3590 and implied it may result in higher premiums for gun owners, but could the language be so broad to include other activities the…

Brady Campaign blames Chicago beating on gun violence

By Steve McGough / October 7, 2009 /

Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, links the railroad tie beating of high school student Derrion Albert to gun violence. Helmke, you are a stupid idiot. You, and everyone else who watched that video knows Albert was beaten by punches, kicks and brutal swings of railroad ties. I saw no…

By Steve McGough / September 30, 2009 /

Did the Heller case clear up the meaning of the Constitution’s 2nd Amendment? D.C v. Heller dealt with an individuals right to possess a firearm for private use, but the case did not address the city, local and state laws restricting ownership or purchase. Next up … McDonald v. Chicago.

Ninth Circuit Defines Second Amendment Rights

By SoundOffSister / April 21, 2009 /

In a decision filed yesterday by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the Second Amendment right to bear arms has been greatly expanded, although I suspect that most people, after reading this paragraph, will wonder why I say that.   The decision is interesting in two respects. First, it is written by the…

Connecticut Legislature schedules hearing on firearm micro-stamping requirement

By Steve McGough / March 12, 2009 /

More feel good legislation targeting firearm owners and future owners. The Connecticut State Legislature has introduced SB 353 that would ban the retail sale of semi-automatic pistols that are not equipped with micro-stamp technology after Jan. 2011. The Joint Committee on the Judiciary will be holding a hearing at 10 a.m. ET on Monday, March…

2nd Amendment: “Reasonable Restrictions Are Still Possible”

By Jim Vicevich / January 15, 2009 /

Arghhhhh! Eric Holder bothers me and should all 2nd amendment advocates. He seems to me to be a now reluctant defender of an individual’s right to own firearms … forced there only by the SCOTUS District of Columbia v. Heller decision. Even in this case his position was well documented … the 2nd Amendment, he…

For those interested, I’m providing links directly to the written transcript and some audio files as well. Walter E. Dillinger speaks before the court for the petitioners , including the city of Washington D.C., at the very beginning of the argument. Within a minute or two, Chief Justice Roberts throws Dillinger off his game and…

The Incremental Approach to Concealed Carry

By Steve McGough / March 16, 2008 / Comments Off on The Incremental Approach to Concealed Carry

On Friday, Malkin’s fill-in blogger, see-dubya, reminded us about Oklahoma’s House bill 2513 that allows for some changes to the state’s firearm laws. Last Thursday, the NRA-ILA reported that an amended version of the bill, authored by Jason Murphey, Republican state representative from the 31st District, will allow for military veterans who possess a valid…
