Shep Smith on Oklahoma mother who shot home invader

As you may have heard, an 18 year old woman – who had just lost her husband to cancer on Christmas day – was home alone with her three month-old baby when two men were attempting to break into her home. When one of the men broke in, she shot him. Dude was DRT. Fox News anchor Shep Smith actually just asked – in a teaser – if the audience thought she should be charged.

Smith really gets my blood boiling frequently. That’s the most idiotic question you could ask. From CBS News.

Sarah McKinley, 18, reportedly was home alone with her infant son just a week after her husband died of lung cancer, when two men tried to break into her house.

McKinley managed to push the couch to the front door to create a barricade, but that didn’t stop the intruders.

“He was from door to door trying to bust in,” McKinley told CBS affiliate KWTV. “I don’t know what he had in his hand besides the knife. I believe he actually had a hammer in his hand at some point because he was hitting that back door with it.”

McKinley called 911 and was on the phone with the operator during the entire 21 minute ordeal. She even asked the operator if she could shoot the intruder.

There are a few things about the aftermath of this story that bug me, but the one primary issue is the media keeps asking if she did the right thing. Are they kidding? Many anti-gun nuts want us to run away from our own home. Grab the kid and head out an open window to escape. That’s unacceptable in my book. One commenter mentioned that maybe she should have used pepper spray, or build a safe room in her house. Good God.

Then we have the anchors like Smith who explain to us Oklahoma state law allows us to shoot people if they break into your house. Why is this not an absolute given? If the doors are locked and you tell someone to go away and they are trying to forcibly enter the house, guess what?

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes … you’ll be DRT (Dead Right There).

I’m not too thrilled the media went out to interview McKinley and had her point a shotgun around. It’s possible the young McKinley pulled out the shotgun for a demonstration on her own initiative, but I’m willing to bet a few dollars the media put her up to that.

Encouraging someone who otherwise was justified in the use of a firearm to brandish it when there’s no need to have it out will help reinforce the notion among the sheep that proponents of the right to bear arms are a bunch of irresponsible gun toting nuts.? Way to go CBS.? I kinda wish the young lady had politely refused to show the weapon at all.

Steve, great post! She did the right thing.
Oklahoma, I believe, has the “Castle Doctrine” which allows citizens to defend their homes against against an imminent threat to his or her life. That’s it. You’ll notice that she is only being tried in the media. The cops haven’t arrested her. The ACLU isn’t demanding that she be jailed for “violating the civil rights” of the accused, and recently dead invader.
The liberal jackal media is made up of, wait for it, liberals. Study after study reveals media liberal bias. Most liberals and certainly those in the media, would soil themselves and dissolve into mush if faced with what Sarah McKinley, 18, was forced to confront. She was defending herself and her infant! The liberal media jackals have no shame. She deserves a medal and the support of all right thinking persons.
Where were the cops for that 21 minutes of terror before Sarah McKinley, 18,was forced to defend her home, her family and herself?

The media keeps leaving out that the intruder was armed with a knife. Lets see if holders Dept. of Injustice brings her up on federal charges.

I don’t care if he had a Nerf football, break into my castle and you’ll be explaining yourself to Saint Peter.

    • wombat319 on January 6, 2012 at 8:17 pm

I’m with you, Murphy. There is no reason ANYONE should be inside my home except me (I live alone). Break in/there are consequences. And I can only assume you are there to do me harm. Let them TRY to convict me for defending my own home. I really don’t care. The intruder will go out in a body bag. Period. (P.S. I’m female and armed.)

It is questions like Smith’s that led to the current low state of self defense in Great Britain: the invader/burglar/attacker has more rights than the victim (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2001/oct/30/tonymartin.ukcrime2).? Running out of your house (into what?) when someone is trying to break in is effectively turning your home and belongings to the offender.? It is no different than telling a rape victim to lie back and take it.
    ?
Great Britain is the ultimate goal of the liberals: total gov’t control (look at “traffic” cameras), a disarmed society (see how hard it is to get a weapon, much less use one), and a socialized medical system full of “anecdotal” failures.
    ?
Coming to a country near you, if the Democrats have their way.

She did the absolute right thing.? Shep is often a dweeb.? This is one of those cases.

Sarah McKinley is simply, my hero.? The Main Stream Media should go to Summer School and learn journalism.

    That’s where they did go.

I find it interesting that she says she wouldn’t have done it if it wasn’t for her son. Interesting…I would have!

I hope she becomes a star. Maybe the NRA can use her for a cover.

  11. ricbee on January 6, 2012 at 11:58 pm

But where were the cops all this time?

    • Lynn on January 7, 2012 at 9:52 am

Probably doing paperwork for the ACLU

With all the bad news lately, it’s good to see a story like this. I have Zero sympathy for the deceased. Instead of burying him, the authorities should throw him on the lawn, and let the dogs pick him clean; that’s all he deserves.?Read the Bible about Jezebel.

  13. Shared Sacrifice on January 7, 2012 at 6:58 pm

I think the media are annoyed that a sympathetic dead victim commands more ratings than a justifiably dead intruder. Let’s see if Oprah or some other windbag gives her an invitation…

    • PatRiot on January 7, 2012 at 9:20 pm

It certainly won’t be Rosie O’Donnell.

    • Moe on January 9, 2012 at 7:59 pm

Rosie? O’Donnell never recovered from Silky Johnson’s remark at the Playa Hater’s Ball!

  14. PatRiot on January 7, 2012 at 9:18 pm

This young lady had the right answer to the following scenario: When trouble is at your door and you have called the police, what will you do while you wait?

-? I think the castle doctrine is far too restrictive.? The right to protect your self should be like your right to free speech, used reasponsibly anywhere you go – from sea to shining sea.

Should Shep Smith be in prison for trying to run over that female reporter during Al Gore’s attempt to steal the 2000 election in Florida? More after this break.

  16. chelly1222 on January 10, 2012 at 9:38 am

She absolutely should not be charged. Entering someones home without their permission is, in my opinion, a violent crime. Good for her. I have to ask though, when did fox news and Shepard smith become considered mainstream media?

  17. WagTheDog on January 10, 2012 at 9:38 am

The question posed by Shep isn’t ment as a judgment on her actions.? He didn’t say if he thought she was justified or not, this was just a poll probably put out by the producers.? Where do you get that Shep was doing anything but reading the teleprompter?

As far as teh question itself is concerned, hell ya she was justified.?
