Obama answers the “is this my new reality” question (Updated video)
I finally got to watch a portion of President Obama’s town hall meeting on CNBC. Specifically, I was wondering how he answered the question from the woman who was tired of defending the One and was wondering if the current economy – and her situation in particular – was going to be the new normal.
Well, I think I did OK guessing what the president’s answers would be. Skip forward to about 10 minutes to see the woman’s question and the full answer – in context – from Obama.
My guess concerning President Obama’s answers…
- The previous administration put us in a bad situation and it’s going to take some more time to fix it. (It’s Bush’s fault)
- We need to do more for small business and the middle class — like her — by stimulating economic growth.
- But we already have done a lot of things for the middle class … health care for those with pre-existing conditions, providing family coverage including kids that are 25 years old.
- And don’t forget the financial reform … you won’t be screwed by those mortgage companies anymore!
Although he certainly did hit on all four during the town hall, his specific answers concerning this woman’s concerns included…
- The federal government took over the student loan market, cutting out the middle man. Of course, no savings yet, and you tell me … what’s going to happen to college tuition for this woman’s two daughters? Sure doesn’t help this woman now.
- Financial reform. I hit that one. Did nothing for this woman at all, she does not even have a credit card.
- Coverage for pre-existing conditions. I hit that one too. Again, does nothing for this woman.
So I got two out of three. Not bad for a complete amateur. I really should have been able to hit the student loan takeover and left out the small business stuff since this lady is not involved with that part of the economy, but I was moving pretty fast…
All in all, the president sat there and told this woman they really did make things better for her during the past 18 months. She obviously did not agree.

The lady was telling just like it is.
Um, while the financial reform bill stopped those bad, nasty mortgage brokers from steering you toward a particular mortgage company because they have a financial incentive to do so, it seems to me that there are an awful lot of foreclosed homes available out there and yet, isn't it more difficult to get a mortgage now than ever before? And doesn't the housing market continue to see a massive downturn? And isn't unemployment still rising? I don't see how this guy can claim any successes during the past 19 months. I've just seen things getting worse and worse and worse. Blaming Bush is passe and people are sick to death of it. When he starts to man up and take responsibility for his administration and his own actions, then maybe he'll get a modicum of respect from us. Right now, he's just a windbag who keeps making it "perfectly clear" that the future is "perfectly murky" for most of us.
Has everyone gotten amnesia? I remember stores where there were more cashiers than buyers, restaurants with 2 tables of customers.
It has gotten better; it is pretty obvious to those who deal in reality and not in partisanship and blame.
And yes we need job creation, and there have been downsizings going on for a very long time. It is unfair and inaccurate to blame it on Mr. Obama.
BTW, it is obvious this lady was a media plant. Please, a CFO with kids in private school?
Better? Better than what, the eternally condemned Bush's 5-6% unemployment? Where is the reality there? The avoidance of partisanship and blame, which continues to this day?
It isn't the downsizings we are worried about anymore, it is the utter lack of upsizings because businesses either don't know what Øbama and the Democrats are going to do, or worse, they do.
As for the "plant", being "obvious" (to you) does not make it fact. Your basic fallacious assumption is that the woman could not possibly be tired of the old liberal solutions to problems that are proving to be ineffective. It shouldn't be too hard to find out if she was a plant or not, presuming the media bothers to go our and find out.

I wonder that if we are to be more patient and that the reforms and fixes are "in the works", then why were they not put into effect immediately? We begin to pay for these reforms almost immediately yet the "programs" don't take effect until 2013, 2014, 2017…

Dims, if i were to advise the prez, I would tell him that he has to remind people that the last administration brought this country to it's knees-remind people as long as the repubs keep trying to blame him! They started a month after his innaugeration and continue to obliterate facts:
1. President Bush came in with a surplus and left with a huge deficit.
2. Bush prosecuted two wars (one through deception), and both without asking our country to sacrifice–usually wars have to be paid for by increased taxes.
3. 9/11 happened on Bush's watch!
4. The Bank rescue plan came out of the Bush Administration.
I could go on and on…please stop trying to change history.

Oh, by the way, Chris, I remember when there were a lot more stores and restaurants, never mind who was in them. Take a ride through a town like Avon (Rte. 44) and make note of all the vacancies. These were once all filled-up with small businesses. More closings and consolidations are coming (i.e. A&P, Mohegan Sun). As a small business person running an S-corp, the squeeze gets tighter and the oxygen hose is kinked.
Yeah, we all can play the partisan blame game but when the 10% bubble of the total economy (i.e. real estate) bursts, the house of cards collapses regardless of who is in charge. The problems we face must be fixed at their source not pile on more gov't control.
Wasn't this the same blog that ridiculed that woman that spoke right after the election about how obama would fill her tank with gas, pay her mortgage among other things? Now here's a woman that says "where's mine?" and she's held up as a hero. and steve, you played right into it, she has no credit card and no pre existing medical condition so she's not being helped NOW. lets all write to the president, tell him of our own special situation and tell him what he needs to do for ME. NOW.
Obama has so far disappointed practically everyone, that is surely true. He and his media followers set the bar too high and many of us went along. Now, barely over a year and a half later, he's being taken to task for doing anywhere from too much to not enough, depending on the political point of view. Obama is certainly no Reagan, but by the fall of 1981, Reagan hadn't gotten many results either. The big difference is we followed him because we believed him, and Obama has lost belief on both sides. Nevertheless, the realistic timeline to expect results should remain the same.

First of all I wish everyone would stop crying……..It's not the governments job to create jobs there are jobs out there,they may not be perfect but they are there go get one or two… that's what I did after a business failure and subsequent bankruptcy.I now work 80 hours a week and earn over 90 per year .The new reality is whatever you want your reality to be so stop complaining .The reason businesses are out of business is because they were not necessary or not run correctly so they shouldn't be there anyway..Stop relying on the government and go get a job.
I agree with you, ricky. I get angered by the government pretending it can create jobs, then taking money from true job creators to fund their crackpot schemes that do little but depress the economy further. All so they can say "they did something". The new reality is bailouts before bankruptcy, and "fairness" before hard work and earning what you live on. The new reality is to be envious and resentful of the successful instead of learning from them and making it on your own. The government insists on taking from them (in the form of selective and punitive taxes) to help those that won't help themselves. Think of how many folks are envious of what you make and would like to "level the playing field", ricky.
The last thing I want is to have to rely on the government and the buffoons that go there to "run" it.

If I'm not mistaken, only congress can declare war. If the dems were sooooooooo against the war on terror, they could have chosen NOT TO FUND IT. I see funding by congress as tacit approval, or the lack of cashews to stand up for their anti-war stance. Whatever your stance, Bush didn't secretly go off to war without congress knowing about it and funding it.
And why is this woman a plant? Because it's not possible for a well-educated, black business woman to disagree with Obama?
This well educated woman is laughable. Obama could have easily answered the question as follows: Is this my new reality ???…..only if you want it to be ..as president I can't give you will and determination ..this has to come from you.When your back is against the wall you need to fight ….this is your battle not mine and certainly not the governments.Now I want you to go home ,think about what I said ,make some calls network,do whatever it takes.Success or failure is up to you.

This woman was a plant? Put on CNBC, a big supporter of Obama, as a way to make him look bad? If CNBC did this, then, you must ask yourselves, "why would the peacock eats its own young?"
It was a darn good question since very few "hard" questions have been asked of him.
She is a CFO of a veterans organization, for God sakes, she's not asking for a hand-out, a hand-up, or a single thing from the government. She's asking "when will you stop stepping on the oxygen hose?" The government under this leadership has passed more oppressive legislation than any in my lifetime.
Ricky: I would agree, particularly with your last sentence, but the policies of the Democrats and Øbama are all about taking success and failure out of our hands, i.e. the temporarily forestalled GM bankruptcy, mortgage buyouts and refinancing and the bank bailouts.
If people think they will be coddled, they will act accordingly, knowing that the government will make it all better no matter how bad a decision they make.
