Media Burned by Fake Bhutto Facebook Page

Sweet. Will the MSM ever learn? I really wonder what is going on in Journalism schools these days. I’m quite certain that finding a story basically involves reading some other news Web sites, and then confirming that story involves reading the same story on some other news Web site.

Check your sources people. (Keep in mind that I’m not a news organization, nor do I pretend to be one, so therefore, much of my content may be pulled from multiple news sources online. Again, I’m not a journalist and I do not plan to meet journalistic standards.)

Many news organizations picked up photos and quotes from the fake Facebook account. Actually, most of the news organizations picked up some portion of the site and posted quotes from Bilawal Bhutto Zardari (Bhutto’s son), who will now become party chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party.

Bilawal did have a real Facebook profile posted, under an alias to keep his identity secret, but content was recently removed from the site to tone-down his image.

But this Facebook page was “significantly downgraded recently,” Ms. [Phillippa] Neal told The Lede today in what would seem to be a case of damage control. As Mr. Bhutto Zadari’s father, Asif Ali Zardari, explained on Sunday night, “in this country, symbols matter.” And a devil costume is no way to present the heir to Benazir Bhutto’s political fortunes.

Before signing off for the day, Ms. Neal strongly warned against a competing profile on Facebook: “The other profile has been set up by someone else, not Bilawal!”

Relax. Take a breath. Check your sources.
