Matthews calls West Point the “enemy camp” Update: Apology. Update 2: Lame Apology

Every time I think Chris Matthews can’t dig a hole any deeper, he just keeps digging. Matthews doing his instant analysis right after the speech is downright verklempt about the reception the President got at West Point. No cheering, no gushing, very quiet. Why nothing like the campaign. Why, do those cadets know who was addressing them? Too much for Chris who takes those young cadets to task.

Jim Geraghty tweeted on this one right after the speech

Chris Matthews has lost his f***ing mind: “He went to the enemy camp tonight, to make the case.”

and Katherine Jean Lopez has the video over at National Review.

Poor Chris. It’s West Point, not a DC party. They’re officers in the making, not Obamabots. Time to pin a name tag on this guy and leave him at the dog track.

AP over at Hot Air is a little kinder than I am.

All he meant, I take it, is that the current commander-in-chief might not be Mr. Popularity among the presumably hawkish, right-leaning majority of cadets. But when your mouth is bigger than your brain, this is what happens.

I am the biggest AP fan on the planet, but on this he is too nice. Matthews indeed sees everything in political terms and in that regard West Point is the enemy camp.

Update: Matthews apologized at the beginning of tonight’s show. He had come under heavy pressure from … West Point alum. We’ll have video in an hour.

Update 2: Ok. Here it is and it is the lamest apology I have ever heard. It’s full of,”everyone knows I support the troops”, “what I meant was”, and “a West Point grad and a friend of mine.” At no point does he say the comment was not only wrong to say … it was flat out wrong. Sorry. This doesn’t cut it for me … but you folks have at it.

Added by Steve: I’d accept the apology. Here’s a transcript. Just note where Matthews’ head is (in general a liberal) and move along?

I used the wrong words and worse than that I said something that is just not right, for that I deeply apologize.

Chris Matthews suffers from that rare form of political tunnel vision that comes from having one's head so far up one's backside, that reality is a tiny star-like dot in the distance, light years away.

From the perspective of a card carrying, knee jerk, bleeding heart, Fifth Columnist, liberal know nothing like Matthews, West Point is the enemy.

Obama's Afgan deployment is an historical repeat of the Sir Garnet Wolseley campaign up the Nile prior to the fall of Khartoum. The complete history of which can be read here… .http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Khartoum…Before Osama Bin Laden there was Muhammad Ahmed Al Mahdi who claimed to be the redeemer of Islam. England had little interest in a Sudan War, but Egypt and the Suez were  a vital asset forcing action. Wolseley was  ordered to help  Khartoum for public and diplomatic  show. However, it was  a half hearted effort . His advance up the Nile was intentionally very slow . Reinfocements failed to arrive in time and  Khartoum fell to the Mahdi at a cost of 7,000+ lives. A reasonably accurate portrayal of these events can be seen in the movie Khartoum, a forgotten B grade movie with many relevant parallels to our war on terror.

Those who forget (or are ignorant of) the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them.  Too bad we will never know what courses he took in college.  I would be really interested to see what history and economics courses he took, what grade he got in them, and who taught them.

Wow – hard to know whether to comment on Matthew's pompous, intellectual ridiculousness, or the comments here!  Matthews must bring out the complex mental creativity la in everyone:

verklempt – great word…does that mean he's both "verbose" and "unkempt"?????

history lesson on Wolsely and the Khartoum fiasco's (not one of my compratiot's finer moments)

Dims – wonderful description of Matthews' nether ends!

NBC looks like it's going to get sold, so maybe Matthews is just spilling his hateful guts out while he can (in a verkempt way, of course).

I've been saving that one for someone truly deserving!  Matthews wins the prize!

If you want to see Chris matthews at his most rabid foaming at the mouth, see his interview with bishop Tobin who pretty much has to remain silent for 6 minutes of verbal smack down.  Forget the dog track. I would not even take Matthews  to the glue factory. People licking their envelopes closed might catch rabies.

It is a vicious cycle: the lower his viewership, the more rabid he becomes, which lowers his viewership, he then become more rabid, ad infinitum.   Is there any hope that if nobody watches him at all, he will simply disappear?

I simply don't understand why anyone comes on his show.  There are better ways to abuse oneself, like nailing your hand to an oak tree.

As far as Matthews is concerned, I believe it was our Sixteenth President  who describes him best when he said, "T'is better to remain silent and appear a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt."  This pretty well describes him.

In regards to Mr. Matthew’s remark in reference to our military as “the enemy camp” has gone too far. I demand that Mr. Matthews apologize for such a treacherous remark and following this apology, I demand that he resign or be let go. His political viewpoint is one thing but to call those brave Americans who serve and protect us “the enemy camp” is inexcusable. It is a disgusting reflection on the news media today. I am so disappointed with the disrespect the media shows our military.
