Life lessons from the undead – “So, you know what a zombie is?”
By now, my fascination with zombies is pretty well known. It’s the one monster movie genre that can catch my attention more than any other. It’s not the horrific, or the amazingly awesome powers these slower than turtle creatures have. No, it’s the real life lessons we learn from the undead, and the parallels with real life human nature.OK, I understand that back in the day monster movies made statements about we are as a nation and sometimes humanity itself. But today, producers seem to go just for the horror and pass on the message. Well give me a moment to draw some parallels.
Now there are plenty of messages for both the left and the right. The left of course would, more than likely, come to the defense of zombies if they were real, on a number of different fronts, but mostly through changing the narrative.
- Undead, not zombie
- Dermatologically challenged, not horrifically ugly
- Mobility impaired, not slide and shuffle scary
- Diet restricted, not human flesh eating carnivores
- Emotionally disabled, instead of soulless, heartless, creatures
You get the idea. Controlling the language makes something horrifying seem so much more … well … palatable. “Oh look, honey, those poor undead. Do we have anything we can toss out for them? Sure dear. How about the kids? They’re radically expensive anyway.”
The left would have you believe that none of the issues tackled in the “Tyranny” trifecta are in danger. That such thoughts are, ummm, fantasy. But if language is softened in order to make “soft tyranny” acceptable (H/T Mark Levin), it still only works if we allow such tyranny to continue to creep into our lives.
My ultimate zombie question has always been, how do they catch us? How is it possible for the undead to get us if they have trouble keeping up with snails on a slow day? The answer was right there in front of me and I never noticed. Zombies catch you because YOU let them catch you. They sneak up on you, moving slowly and kinda stealthy (well as stealth as an undead person can be) until … bam … your door is blown out and you become the protein powder that keeps em at that peak performance.
And so it is with the progressives. First God, then guns, then … you. Poof, or is that slurp. But, for those who are vigilant, for those who see the creeping and the sliding and life blood of democracy slowly being sucked away, there is hope. It starts with one voice, one person, in a zombie movie …. but just as slowly other “humans” begin to show their faces and fight back, and, surprisingly to some, find that fighting these zombies, is easier than they had thought.
I apologize if I have ruined zombie movies for you. Now, whenever you watch, you will be looking for analogies with lefties … too busy to enjoy the fright of it all. But then maybe that’s good. Sometimes real life is more frightening than a Hollywood movie. Sometimes the zombies are us.

Jim, I have always loved it when you play this on your show. However, I never knew it was from a Bob Hope movie. God, I loved his movies. My husband loves zombie movies as well. I think we have seen almost every Netflix zombie movie made. Thanks for your explanation of zombies being like lefties, it works for me and I'd like to think Bob Hope, too.

Zombies don’t really scare me much, I suppose I should be scared, but for some reason they don’t affect me like that. The smell of rotting flesh, and their insatiable need to destroy every living thing they come in contact with is an obvious nuisance to our society, and it has been identified as a genuine problem, not only here, but all around the world. How can we contain or regulate this antisocial behavior? It is my opinion that the problem should first be recognized as a disease, and preventive measures must be made in attempt to discover the underlying problem that allowed these ordinary everyday people to choose or accept this fate. Does their environmental upbringing contribute to the result of this undead plight that our communities are left to deal with? What is the definitive reason that these individuals decided to turn their life into such a hopeless scenario that the chance of ever restoring their life back to what could be considered normal is almost nonexistent? What made them think that heroine wouldn’t turn them into the same zombies that it turns everyone else into? There are many questions, and few answers.
Maybe global warming is the cause. Coupled with that oddball gene.Not just a social thing, it's built into the genes. It's not their fault at all so in reality it is a disease. Jim described it all right at the beginning.
Jim, I don't really like zombie movies but I feel I have to defend them. Please stop comparing them to democrats. It doesn't do them justice. 🙂

Jim, your re-evaluation of zombies using p.c. terms is hilarious.
It makes me realize that the 7 Deadly Sins are no longer considered sins nor do people make judgments against sinful behavior in our society. Now, there are "reasons" for everything. If you are slothful, you're not physically active enough and need to increase your activity level; if you display anger, you have to go to anger management classes and take meds; if you are full of pride, you're chalked up as a narcissistic personality disorder. Lust? Go to sex rehab like Tiger Woods. If you are a glutton, you have an eating disorder and there's surgery for that (which technically only reinforces the sloth part of the whole equation because you never have to work off the effects of your gluttony).
Just an observation…
I'm probably speaking to the choir, but I find all of George A. Romero's zombie movies to be jam pacted with political analogies. Jim, have you checked out his latest movies "Survival of the Dead" and "Diary of the Dead"? They are both very entertaining. Especially "Diary" as it's all about a kid documenting the zombie apoclaypse and being more concerned with making a good movie than his or his friend's survival.

"The Walking Dead" Sunday night on AMC 10PM is excellent, I’m really loving it, and if you have “On Demand” it’s a free replay till the end of the month, the first three episodes were greeeeeeat… I do hate commercials though, breaks the flow of the show, I hope they eventually put it out on DVD.
