Lefty quandary: Blame Bush … or ask for help? Update- Ed Morrissey and Wyndeward

It is so hard to be a lefty these days. No, not because of their loyal stance to statism. I think they are wrong, especially when it comes to economics but … they are entitled to their opinion. No, it’s hard because of all of the self inflicted wounds by Democrat politicians. Case in point … the Ground Zero Mosque. They get forced into a corner, come down on the wrong side … try to work their way out and end up having to decide: Blame Bush or ask for his help. Yikes!

First the blames Bush crowd. This was not even postable at first. I mean, what’s news about Democrat strategist Steve McMahon blaming Bush for the Ground Zero controversy that … ummm .. the Democrat President enflamed? But that’s just what he did when he tried to make the case that all of this got started with Bush.

Now let’s set aside that we were attacked 9 months into the Bush presidency when the attacks occurred. That it would seem the attacks were vengeance against the prior President’s cruise missile strategy in the middle east.

Yet despite this knock on the knee, reflexive strategy by lefties when it comes to bad news, McMahon apparently didn’t get the memo. Even as he was speaking, the queen of the lefties Maureen Dowd was penning her column for the NY Times and asking for “W”‘s help.

Our enemies struck at our heart, but did they also warp our identity?

The war against the terrorists is not a war against Islam. In fact, you can’t have an effective war against the terrorists if it is a war on Islam.

George W. Bush understood this. And it is odd to see Barack Obama less clear about this matter than his predecessor. It’s time for W. to weigh in.

My goodness. The left calling for President Bush’s help? You mean Bushhitler? Dump Bush? Evil Bush? Can’t wait to whack him President George W. Bush?

UPDATE: RVO blogger Wyndeward weighs in too.

Apparently, the mosque madness has created a sea change amongst certain members of the left.

“The war against the terrorists is not a war against Islam. In fact, you can’t have an effective war against the terrorists if it is a war on Islam.

George W. Bush understood this. And it is odd to see Barack Obama less clear about this matter than his predecessor. It’s time for W. to weigh in.”

Excuse me?  Ms. Dowd wants George W. Bush, widely derided as the village idiot by the Democrats and as the cause of all out national troubles by Barak Obama, to come save that self-same “clean and articulate” Obama?  After continually harrying and demonizing Bush, the clarion call goes out for him to come save them from themselves?

I guess it is true — the difference between fiction and reality is that fiction has to make some sort of sense.

When do I wake up?

UPDATE: My bad … we tipped to this story by Ed Morrissey at Hot Air this morning on the show. He also reminds us, it’s not just Ms Dowd asking for help … via The Washington Examiner.

Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson is also looking for an assist from Bush. “I…would love to hear from former President Bush on this issue,” Robinson wrote Tuesday in a Post chat session. “He held Ramadan iftar dinners in the White House as part of a much broader effort to show that our fight against the al-Qaeda murderers who attacked us on 9/11 was not a crusade against Islam. He was absolutely right on this point, and it would be helpful to hear his views.”

Thanks again to Ed, we were all over this, this morning early. It pays to have guests in the know. And you might want to read his take. YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED.

That, of course, is one of the delicious ironies of this situation.  Obama has done nothing but attack and demonize Bush for the last nineteen months, mainly to distract attention from Obama’s own failures on the economy.  In fact, while Dowd et al demand a response from Bush, Obama is busy on the campaign trail (an activity that Obama chided the GOP for doing while Obama attended big fundraisers) attempting to continue blaming Bush for the economic slide Obama promised to prevent with his massive spending.

It’s not the only irony, though.  If Bush was inclined to comment on the situation, he may very well echo Obama, or at least talk about the compatibility of liberty and moderate Islam.  After all, the entire exercise in Iraq was and is predicated on the notion that Islam and democracy are not incompatible, a point that some enraged by the Ground Zero mosque seem to have forgotten.

I have just had it with these no-mind Libtards that blame Bush on everything. They obviously were not weaned enough as babies and need to get their Chi together. I would rather be in a ditch with GW, able to be pulled out, then go off the cliff with BO and have no hope whatsoever!!

You would be in the ditch alone, he would be AWOL, like when he was in the service.

He might also be keeping the skies above Texas safe while pretending to be a fighter pilot.

Given that Bush has not lifted a finger to defend himself against the onslaught of blame being leveled at him by Øbama and the Democrats before or after January 20, 2009, why (other than the fact that he is a decent guy) should he lift a finger to pull them out of a hole of their own creation?

This is a Kobiyashi maru (a no win situation for non-Trekkies) for Bush.

It can and will be spun against him either way.

Worse, it would also be treated/twisted an admission of guilt.

No doubt Øbama will try the Kirk solution….

"Bush visited the Islamic Center in Washington six days after the attacks and declared: 'The face of terror is not the true faith of Islam. That's not what Islam is all about. Islam is peace. These terrorists don't represent peace. They represent evil and war.'"

If only these journalistic hacks would go back to direct quotes from President George W. Bush, maybe they wouldn't look like the absolute pinheads they are.

If I were Pres. Bush, I'd stay out of this one. It's a lose-lose for him.

sammy 1st time I agree with you. Scary huh

call me crazy, but I think that some, including Eugene Robinson, believe that Bush earned the benefit of the doubt on this issue,  especially in his speech on 9/30/01 where he clearly separated islamic extremists from the more moderate and peaceful muslims. They may be looking at Bush to bring a semblance of temperance an issue that is getting more extreme (and therefore less meaningful) by the day.

But Bush has nothing to gain by speaking out. If I were him, I'd say, "I'll weigh in after Chuck Schumer does."That'll be safe cover for awhile.

Bush miss me yet top
