LA Police chief supports drivers licenses for illegal aliens
Goodness grief. The chief’s reasoning is nothing they have been doing to reduce the number of illegal aliens illegally driving cars has worked. So they might as well give up and offer them a drivers license.
Really? When asked about the concern the program would make it easier for terrorists to go undetected, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck noted…
… such concerns are outweighed by what he said would be improved safety on California roads and the ability of police to identify the people they encounter. “Why wouldn’t you want to put people through a rigorous testing process? Why wouldn’t you want to better identify people who are going to be here?” he said. “It doesn’t make any sense to me. And we could increase safety on the roads. When you make things illegal you cause a lot of other things by chain reaction.”
Beck, for example, said he would expect the number of hit-and-run accidents to decrease if illegal immigrants were licensed, because illegal immigrant drivers would not have to fear being caught without a license at accidents.
I’m sorry, but what they heck is happening to our country? We have a police chief who thinks illegal aliens will voluntarily walk into a state department office, go through a “rigorous” testing program and pay to get a licence that identifies them as an illegal alien who can legally drive in the United States.
And get this. Part of Beck’s reasoning is illegal aliens have been disproportionally hurt by California law requiring vehicles of unlicensed drivers be impounded, despite being fully cognizant of the fact that the drivers can fully obtain a hardship license even after being impounded. On the contrart, you can find a list of reason why your hardship license might have been rejected, because the belts have been tightened on those grounds, too. So his answer is to offer illegal aliens a California license so their cars will not be impounded. One could say this is another example of I-just-want-to-be-treated-like-an-illegal-alien syndrom.
What about American citizens who don’t have a licence for one reason or another? Maybe they did something illegal that made them ineligible for a drivers license? See what I did there?

Simple concept:? In *most* places in the U.S.? illegal = ineligible.? In CA (and MA) it’s not illegal to be illegal.

It is important for people who are here illegally to have lawful ID so that when they’re in drunk driving accidents, families will know the name of the driver who killed their loved ones. Drivers licenses for criminal aliens also opens up opportunities for entrepreneurial forgers to provide them with IDs. It’s a win-win-win-win-win for everyone who isn’t a racist, chimichanga peddling homophobe.
