Karma! Obama snubs the Dalai Lama

Is it because he doesn’t look like him, or has a funny name, or maybe because he doesn’t quite fit into the young President’s circle of brutal dictators and tyrants? My guess is … it’s the latter.

For the first time since 1991, Barack Obama snubbed the Dalai Lama today due to pressure from the communist Chinese government. Obama will not meet with the Dalai Lama this week in Washington DC.

CBS is reporting the meeting is only delayed until Obama can meet with President Hu next month. Sound reasonable? To some maybe.

The U.S. decision to postpone the meeting appears to be part of a strategy to improve ties with China that also includes soft-pedaling criticism of China’s human rights and financial policies as well as backing efforts to elevate China’s position in international institutions, such as the International Monetary Fund. Obama administration officials have termed the new policy “strategic reassurance,” which entails the U.S. government taking steps to convince China that it is not out to contain the emerging Asian power.

What’s disturbing is that the President throws the Dalai Lama under the bus (along withRev Wright and his Grandmother) in the name of political correctness. Here’s a question for you. Do you think this politicking will make the Chinese anymore likely to negotiate or just send a signal that we will capitulate? I guess the later.

Here’s my take. I think this will make the Chinese even bolder in its treatment of the Tibetans and quite possibly in any economic or military negotiations with the United States. It is weakness they will see and weakness they will exploit.

“We’ve got the classic case of a Western government yet again conceding to Chinese pressure that is imaginary long after that Chinese pressure has ceased to exist,” said Robert Barnett, a Tibetan expert at Columbia University. “The Chinese must be falling over themselves with astonishment at what Western diplomats will give them without being asked. I don’t know what the poker analogy would be. ‘Please, see all my cards and take my money, too?’ “

So, the leader of Buddhists around the globe, a man who is a symbol of peace and compassion has been rejected by an arrogant young President in favor of a totalitarian regime that has overrun and annexed a free an independent nation, routinely slaughtered Tibetans, harvested organs from undesirable religious groups and otherwise imprisoned political opponents …. all in the name of progress.

Might be time to revisit the meeting that took place with a man who truly defends freedom. President Bush defending his decision to meet with the Lama in 2007.

Someday you will tell your children we were a nation that once valued freedom and liberty … and had the courage to stand up for any man, any nation, and people who sought the same. A nation that stood strong against tyrants, despite public, popular or political opinion. We were once a nation that was not only the land of the free … but also the home of the brave.

To you, it is just a snub, but for me  it is sadly symbolic of who this young President is.
