EPA to regulate milk spills

Yes, you read that headline correctly. The federal government has decided that spilled milk creates a serious enough danger that it needs to be regulated, and, the  EPA is just the agency to do so.  Follow the bouncing ball, here.

It seems that the EPA has discovered that milk contains,

a percentage of animal fat, which is a non-petroleum oil.

And, because oil spills can be hazardous, regulation is clearly warranted.  So, here’s what dairy farmers, as well as any places that make “cheese, butter, yogurt, ice cream and the like” will need to do.  They must

prepare and implement an emergency plan in the event of a milk catastrophe.  Among dozens of requirements, farmers must train first responders in cleanup protocol and build ‘containment facilities’ such as dikes or berms… These plans must be in place by November…

Given the seriousness of this potential hazzard the EPA originally proposed additional regulations covering,

the design specifications of  ‘milk containers and associated piping and appurtenances’.

But, the EPA backed off here when they learned that those items were already regulated by the FDA, the USDA and the states.

So much for the President’s promise to eliminate regulations that have an unreasonable burden on business.

    Oh brother.

It begs the question….Are our leaders just messin' with us?

Mission creep to the point of irrelevance.

I have to laugh or I'll cry. My grandfather and then my uncle ran a wonderful dairy farm. Through the years it became harder and harder to keep it going. Instead of selling the land to developers, like everyone else did, my cousin rents it to others to raise animals or to grow food. The Liberals now tout their green approach "Farmers" are people who buy and sell expensive coffee and soap. I'm all for keeping true farms in the hands of their owners, and helping sustain them with loans for feed or farm equipment. A farmer will always pay back his loans, but to saddle farmers with ridiculous regulations. A pox on their house.

The 'progressives' are so entangled in there insanity no common sense is left. We had a leftest call in to our town siting we were polluting the river with manure, the complaint stated; the truth was our ducks and geese were swimming in the river and the leftest feared they would poop in there. The town official and I laughed as we discussed how to rid the world of wild birds, deer and other wild critters that all come to the river to eat, drink and well.. poop. I told the guy, liberalism is a mental disorder; he told me, that complaint was a perfect example of it and why they should all live in a city and complain about the pigeons.

I have digressed from topic or have I? Milk spills, animal fat having 'oil' content; have they no sense or is this one more way of regulating us to the point of handing in our freedom for complete government control. Farmers have land, they are strong in character and spirit, only one way to take control of a true patriotic farmers is to break the farming back of the country.

Thomas Jefferson believed the back bone of the country was agriculture, without it the country cannot stand in freedom, perhaps our 'progressive' thinkers have thought of everything; never believing for a moment, this takeover is by accident, do I dare say the government is now trying to break America's back bone?

Thomas Jefferson also believed that slaves would provide the labor to keep agriculture humming. Very nice.

Isn't that what Democrats think of the illegal aliens?

I have now changed my mind completely. Because Jefferson owned slaves, I think it's a smart use of government resources to regulate spilled milk.

Bringing up the Founding Fathers for any occasion, and making it sound like they were Saints, does not solve/resolve any of current issue. The EPA "foolish" attempt at regulation stands on its own, w/o the reference to  Thomas Jefferson

  12. Dimsdale on January 28, 2011 at 6:04 am

Compared to the hack politicians of today, Jefferson was a saint.  At least he was competent at any rate.

So, the EPA determines that MILK must now be handled and stored the same as Petroleum, and liquid chemicals………what about OLIVE OIL? VEGATABLE OIL? LARD? Many other plants contain oil, what will be next? Will supermarkets have to install secondary containment systems in the refrigerated section? Will Stop&Shop now be required to fill out spill reports and submit them to CTDEP whenever a gallon hits the floor?

This is COMPLETE INSANITY FOLKS. My fater tells me that back in the 1950's the Federal government implemented such onerous rules covering the production and WHOLESALE PRICE of milk that more than HALF of the dairy farms in Connecticut went out of business, and it continued downhill from there.

Let me ask……Did the communists even go this far in the former Soviet Union?

FYI http://www.epa.gov/emergencies/docs/oil/spcc/spcc… This is what the milk people must now comply with.

The Feds won't rest until we have been regulated into a third world country. They are COMPLETELY OUT OF CONTROL. IT DIDN"T WORK IN RUSSIA, IT WONT WORK HERE.

  14. PatRiot on January 28, 2011 at 7:11 am

After the EPA failed to take charge and responsibility for overseeing the gulf oil spill, I laugh at this latest fiasco by so called leaders.

    But I worry as well.

it is becoming blatantly clear that Feds, of any party, are restricting American's freedoms.  Just because the term "illegal immigrant" has replaced the word slave, doesn't mean that the term "middle class" will be spared slave status.

  15. sammy22 on January 28, 2011 at 11:47 am

Dims, still Thomas Jefferson has no relevance to the EPA (a 20th century "invention"). Why bring him into the conversation at all??

  16. sammy22 on January 28, 2011 at 11:50 am

And the Feds of the 18th century did not restrict Americans freedoms? Tell that to the native Americans, the Blacks born on US soil, countless immigrants etc.

I think we need a moratorium on milk drilling.

The only reason we're in Iraq & Afghanistan is for milk.

President Bush made it clear, "This war is not about milk".

Sorry if I sound glib about this, but C'MON!  Doesn't our gov. have anything better to do than control milk spills?  And where does breast milk fall into this whole shebang?

  18. joe_m on January 29, 2011 at 2:29 am

Bureaucracy marches on. The more regulations, the more control. Someone in power does not like you or want what you have, they can find something you are in violation of.

Yes, it would be funny if it was not real. You can be pulled over by a cop and given a ticket because he can find something (or make it up) and you can't do anything about it.

Your home, your business and your freedom are at risk. It's part of the plan.

    I'm not paranoid, am I?

Isn't it about time that we defunded this renegade group? They're totally out of control… and pretty useless too. I think they aught to be flushed, along with the Department of Education and the National Endowment For The Arts.
