English Riots: Coming to a city near you?

I just read a superb article about the causes of the riots in England. It is titled “Years of liberal dogma have spawned a generation of amoral, uneducated, welfare dependent, brutalized youngsters.”  It is worth a read.

Update: this was written yesterday, before Jim opened with the subject on today’s show.  Sorry for any repitition.

In summary, it describes in great detail how the liberalization of the schools and the rise of the welfare state has produced what is characterized as “feral children….at the bottom of our society is a layer of young people with no skills, education, values or aspirations. They do not have what most of us would call ‘lives’: they simply exist…The notions of doing a nine-to-five job, marrying and sticking with a wife and kids, taking up DIY or learning to read properly, are beyond their imaginations.”

To quote a relevant passage:

This has ultimately been sanctioned by Parliament, which refuses to accept, for instance, that children are more likely to prosper with two parents than with one, and that the dependency culture is a tragedy for those who receive something for nothing.

The judiciary colludes with social services and infinitely ingenious lawyers to assert the primacy of the rights of the criminal and aggressor over those of law-abiding citizens, especially if a young offender is involved.

The police, in recent years, have developed a reputation for ignoring yobbery and bullying, or even for taking the yobs’ side against complainants.

‘The problem,’ said Bill Pitt, the former head of Manchester’s Nuisance Strategy Unit, ‘is that the law appears to be there to protect the rights of the perpetrator, and does not support the victim.’

Police regularly arrest householders who are deemed to have taken ‘disproportionate’ action to protect themselves and their property from burglars or intruders. The message goes out that criminals have little to fear from ‘the feds’.

Sound familiar?
The author’s description of the problem continues:
They are an absolute deadweight upon society, because they contribute nothing yet cost the taxpayer billions. Liberal opinion holds they are victims, because society has failed to provide them with opportunities to develop their potential.

Most of us would say this is nonsense. Rather, they are victims of a perverted social ethos, which elevates personal freedom to an absolute, and denies the underclass the discipline — tough love — which alone might enable some of its members to escape from the swamp of dependency in which they live.

Finally, the author has the only sane solution:

Unless or until those who run Britain introduce incentives for decency and impose penalties for bestiality which are today entirely lacking, there will never be a shortage of young rioters and looters such as those of the past four nights, for whom their monstrous excesses were ‘a great fire, man’.

Do the recent flash mob crimes in PhiladelphiaChicago and most recently, the apparently racially motivated attacks at the State Fair in Wisconsin ring any bells, just to name a few?  The link between these crimes and the riots in England are the fact that disaffected youths, products of decades of liberal “mothering”, have turned violent at a moment’s notice, and, using social media software, coordinated crimes across cities.

Do the recent riots in Greece and earlier in Great Britain, due to austerity measures being necessarily enacted, look like something that could only happen in some foreign country?  Don’t bet on it.  Great Britain and Greece, among others, had a head start, but our liberals are right on their heels, and we are starting to see the effects here.

Social media may produce the “Arab spring” effect, but the other side of the coin may produce a “Fall” (in all senses of the word) in the west.

Liberalism may be the mental disorder Michael Savage calls it, but it has many of the characteristics of a pandemic, and appears to be virulent, spreading rapidly from host country to host country.

These recent riots in London and the flash mobs in a number of American cities is the results of a west which has abandoned its morals.

Dims, thanks for that post.? Things have come a long way from my English?childhood when we were “seen but not heard” (no age-related comments, please Winnie!!!).? To his credit, David Cameron has given tax incentives for couples to actually marry (yikes, what have we come to) because British only seem to have “partners” these days and marriage has become an anachranism.? Secular society fed by social benefits has led to a generation that is lost in every sense of the word.

  3. rickyrock on August 11, 2011 at 6:50 pm

No one in their right mind condones this nonsense..the problem is one of degree ..social benefits in and of themselves didn’t create these riots ..it’s the lawless immoral nature of the perpetrators.Do we stop social security, medicare, food stamps for the needy………………………. all forms of welfare??? These programs aren’t the cause of the riots…. this isn’t a generation of evil …these jerks don’t represent the majority and should be prosecuted.

    • Dimsdale on August 11, 2011 at 7:11 pm

No, we limit it to the truly needy.? Of course these thugs don’t represent the majority, but they do show how thin the veneer of civilization can be, and this veneer is considerably thinner than in times past.

The?”Needy” is the operative word. Who and what is a “needy person?” Someone who can’t find a job? No. Someone who would rather run around with a gang than work? No. Someone who sells their food stamps for drugs? No. Someone using their state debit card at the casinos? No.
Someone who is walking around with?a?designer?purse or $300.00 sneakers that they bought with their monthly check? No.??
You need to learn a little about the differences between welfare, medicare etc. Social Security and Medicare are NOT welfare. This money is taken out of a persons paycheck their entire life as a retirement benefit. Medicaid and Welfare checks are handouts from the government taken from tax paying, working citizens. When the amount of people receiving the handouts, welfare, went out of control, they started taking money from the Medicare and Social Security funds and throwing them into the “Welfare Fund” to help pay all these, “Needy people”
So now you need to weed out the fraud and believe me there is fraud. It doesn’t take people long to figure out how to beat the system.
There must be something put in place to ensure that only those who absolutely are in need of assistance receive it. The cheaters and robbers need to be…

Cherwin, I agree with you on this post. I can’t go totally with your post below. Some of those you call worthless human beings are actually third or fourth generation welfare families and literally have no idea about how to work. I’m not smart enough to figure out how you teach them basic living skills. But on all else we agree

  4. gillie28 on August 11, 2011 at 7:26 pm

We are talking about the UK here which was under socialism for decades.? People came in from other countries and could immediately claim all kinds of social benefits and entitlements without any sense of accountability or responsibility.? Most of these kids grew up in that kind of an expectation.

  5. cherwin on August 11, 2011 at 9:15 pm

Yes it is a loss of morals because the liberals insist that throwing money at people who have no morals is going to show how caring and giving they are. The truth is they are just throwing the dog a bone and hoping it will be satisfied and go away and leave them alone.
They have created a monster?and now they don’t know what to do?with it. Try to take anything?away and demand more accountability and all hell breaks loose.
Yes, keep?letting Obama and other liberals demoralize the working people who support all these people?to the point of saying, “No More, We are not going to work our butts off and hand it over to those who sit around?on their butts all day. Then there will be utter chaos.
I don’t care what color you are, what religion or what sexual orientation, if you want to suck off the system, which?is the working persons money, then you are a worthless human being. I don’t care what kind of?job you have to take or what you have to do to earn a living, just do?it! You’re days of taking money from others, which is stealing, are almost over. You have?sucked the system dry and there ain’t?no more.
Get a life, get some morals, get your mind on something besides, rap music, making babies, drugging, drinking, gang…

?We won’t have those riots, because Americans can & will protect themselves & their property. The hooligans know they will be punished. But the UK looters know they will get no retribution from the honest citizens or the law.

  7. sammy22 on August 12, 2011 at 6:22 pm

Meanwhile the socialist UK has a AAA rating.

    • Dimsdale on August 14, 2011 at 10:41 am

After the austerity moves that kept them there (and tore the proles from the gov’t teat, hence the riots).

    • Lynn on August 14, 2011 at 8:57 pm

Yes, Sammy you do have convenient memory losses. Do you remember Margaret Thatcher?

  8. sammy22 on August 12, 2011 at 6:35 pm

The riots did not come out of nowhere. They appear to be a reaction to the austerity measures that are starting to take hold. Hooliganism must be condemned, but implying that this is the result of loss of morals or “socialist” policies is simplistic at best.

    • Dimsdale on August 14, 2011 at 10:42 am

Not a loss of morals, but rather, the expression of liberal “morals” that have been taught to them, both in school and through legislation.

  9. sammy22 on August 14, 2011 at 12:31 pm

Germany is AAA, and so is France and another dozen countries way more socialist than the US. As to the lesson on morals, I was not aware that Dims is an expert on the UK. My apologies.

    • Dimsdale on August 15, 2011 at 12:33 am

No need to get snarky, sammy.

  10. sammy22 on August 14, 2011 at 12:39 pm

The UK has had AAA rating since the inception of the ratings.

    • Dimsdale on August 15, 2011 at 12:34 am

And as I continually remind you, kept that rating through austerity measures.? You act like the socialism kept them afloat!

This post and its references are the clearest, deadon?journalism op/ed I have seen in a LONG time.
It is a shame to see perfectly capable individuals mis-shapen by misguided “leaders” of ANY stripe.
-????? Yet, more than one factor is at work here.
The economics of late only add fuel to the mix.
http://www.indexmundi.com/commodities/? will show that the price of goods?are indeed a factor of?unrest.? Check out rice (10yr graph) which is a staple for most of the world.

I see these world wide riots as the first physical damage causing?red herring that big government, business?and/or bankers are?using in order to keep us off balance while they take more control of us.??????
And truly, with the price of goods going up, higher taxes and?the burden of greater debt load, are any of us that far from being this strapped or frustrated?
    Yet being?better educated:??
What solutions do we have for dealing with this???
Whom is the right party to approach?instead of beating on our fellow Americans?
Will we state our cases in a civil manner until blue in the face, only to find deaf ears?
Will we run out of time before we run out of civil options?

  12. Tim-in-Alabama on August 14, 2011 at 2:36 pm

The UK has a AAA rating and riots. The US has a AA+ rating and a burgeoning TEA Party movement. Therefore, the TEA Party caused the UK riots. I think I understand the logic.

  13. kateinmaine on August 14, 2011 at 5:22 pm

is it moral or just to create a permanent, dependent underclass?? that is the intended outcome of socialism, be it clear-eyed or back-door (a la ‘great society’).?? why would anyone expect ‘entitled’ ‘victims’ to behave within the confines of rules??? if the rules do not apply to government or? lawmakers, why would the ‘most vulnerable’ expect to be inconvenienced???? i’m still trying to piece the connection to the credit rating–does uk welfare provide credit, too?? wow, we really are backward. . .

    • gillie28 on August 14, 2011 at 8:08 pm

Sammi, UK no longer socialist.? Conservative (well, for Europe) PM has introduced huge cuts in gvt spending.? Not blaming gangs/mob riots?on LOSS of moral – youth were taught no morals to lose!? Secular state, spiritual values taken out of everything,?few family units…..Oh, this sounds familiar…..(born and bred in UK, so don’t diss me!).

  14. gillie28 on August 14, 2011 at 8:10 pm

ps Cameron is removing any benefits for those convicted in these riots. Good for him.

  15. sammy22 on August 15, 2011 at 11:35 am

As I keep reminding you, Dims, the inference/statement that liberalism/socialism are to be “blamed” for the rioting is simplistic. As to the rating, the austerity measures kept the UK where it was already in AAA. Germany, France, the Netherlands etc. have the highest rating because their governments do the “right” things.

    • Dimsdale on August 15, 2011 at 11:35 pm

Precisely: we weren’t allowed to do the “right things” a.k.a. the Ryan plan or something similar, because of the intransigence of the Democrats and ?bama.
      ?
You continually prove my point, and gillie has the personal input regarding the socialist nature (formerly) of GB.
