Symptom of the Disease: Federal funds used for N.J. Hurricane Sandy relief

By Steve McGough | January 13, 2014 |

This is the kind of stuff that always comes up when the federal government steps in to provide funding to a local area with a bail out. New Jersey and Gov. Chris Christie is being investigated concerning how they spent federal dollars for a marketing campaign to promote the state and its shoreline.

Seattle Socialist council member – “Take over factories … shut down profit-making machine”

By Steve McGough | November 21, 2013 |

On Nov. 6, I told you how Prop 1 in SeaTac, Washington passed, requiring businesses to pay a minimum wage of $15 and provide paid sick leave. Now, a Seattle City council member – who ran as a Socialist – suggested “workers should take over the factories, and shut down Boeing’s profit-making machine.”

The $15 per hour minimum wage experiment comes to SeaTac

By Steve McGough | November 6, 2013 |

Let’s see how this goes during the next two to three years shall we? It’s not a done deal, but SeaTac Proposition 1 looks like it will pass, requiring businesses to pay hospitality and transportation workers a minimum wage of $15 per hour. The previous minimum wage was $9.19, but I’m not sure what the average pay…

By Steve McGough | October 28, 2013 |

By Steve McGough | October 28, 2013 |

My dad was an economics major in college and I enjoy the subject even though I don’t understand all of it. That said, I started reading a post this morning in the UK Guardian referencing current economics students and how they need to expand their training to more than neoclassical theory.

By Steve McGough | October 23, 2013 |

If you like your policy, you can keep it. If you like your doctor, you can keep him or her. Those were lies. We told you over-and-over this was the case.

Obama administration bullies would close every business if they could

By Steve McGough | October 5, 2013 |

The stories we are reading about the Federal government closing open-air monuments, federal parks and even private businesses operated on federal property is infuriating. There is no reason for it at all, and in many cases President Obama is spending more funds to close an area than needed to leave it open.

Athletic shoes for the military – Connecticut company pushes to get contract

By Steve McGough | August 28, 2013 |

I found this story in The Hartford Courant and thought it might be worthy of discussion. In short, a 1941 federal law requires most military clothing be made using domestic materials by domestic suppliers, but for some time now running shoes have been exempt from the law for the simple fact there are few domestic…

Callifornia wants 3% of income for your “future retirement needs”

By Steve McGough | July 26, 2013 |

I guess in the real world of California, residents don’t have the capacity to figure out they may need some money saved up if they want to retire at some point. Trust me, your going to see more of this in the future … states creating retirement savings programs they control for you to dish…

All was fine with regulating and taxing marijuana … till you saw the tax rate

By Steve McGough | July 10, 2013 |

Legalize it, regulate and tax it! That has been the battle-cry of those interested in ending the prohibition of marijuana in the United States. Well, they asked for it and they are going to get it in Colorado, which is suggesting a 35 percent tax to cover the “cost of regulation”.
