Five South Dakota lawmakers have introduced legislation that would require any adult 21 or older to buy a firearm “sufficient to provide for their ordinary self-defense.”
Obviously this is not going to (or even meant to) pass. This proposed South Dakota bill emphasizes that setting a precedent of mandated purchases is dangerous! Even if you think that mandating health care is a good idea I am sure you can connect the dots with this metaphorical legislation and recognize that this notion of mandated purchases is a poor one.

The site is not broken.
This was tried in Kennashaw County, Georgia (in the 1980s) with a resulting dramatic DECREASE in crimes against persons and property. Criminals simply went somewhere else where the pickings were easier. and safer for them.
That is because (some) criminals are smart and (most are) cowards; they would much rather attack an unarmed, unaware citizen going about his or her daily routine. History is replete with examples of armed individuals and groups (yes, even the "good guys") dominating unarmed individuals or groups, often to the point of annihilation.
Anyone who has been a victim of a crime knows well the vulnerability and fear following a criminal encounter. Sadly, our police don't exist to protect each and every one of us. The police are overburdened and get involved in a criminal event usually only AFTER something untoward has taken place.
Australia responded to a particularly heinous firearms crime by banning virtually ALL firearms no matter how honest and law-abiding the owner. Tough, turn it in. The result: crimes against persons skyrocketed! Muggings, home invasions and robberies, to only mention a few categories of crimes flourished. The police were completely overwhelmed.
Think how different these situations would be if the citizens themselves were the FIRST line of defense. Armed citizens need to be protected by laws that clearly protect the rights of the innocent and slam criminal perpetrators.
I, and many others, will be following the South Dakota proposal with great interest.
