We learned today that Janet Napolitano, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, is leaving her job with this administration. She will now be the new president of the California University system.
Napolitano had given no indication publicly that she would leave, although she was seen as a possible successor to Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. should he depart. Administration officials said Napolitano, who had extensive law enforcement experience in Arizona, did not hide her desire to be attorney general and grew discouraged about her prospects as Holder stayed well into Obama’s second term.
This, of course, prompts some questions.
Did Ms. Napolitano think Mr. Holder would be canned by the President…see: the New Black Panthers, Fast and Furious, or the IRS scandal investigation (or, more to the point, lack of investigation)?
Or, who would you rather have running the Department of Justice, Mr. Holder or Ms. Napolitano?
And finally, what will happen to the university system in California under her guidance?
