2009 New York City abortion rate review – residents and non-residents

The Internet is buzzing this morning with the 40 percent figure, so I figured I would take a look at the New York City report myself. There has been some question concerning the residency of those mothers in the report, and I’m going to try and dig into that here.

Update to add: Wherever you are, say a prayer for the 10 babies per hour who are aborted in New York City during 2009.

Hat tip to Ed Morrissey at Hot Air for the pointer. I’m making the 2009 Summary of Vital Statistics for the City of New York (PDF, 5.7 MB) available here. I’ll refer to page numbers, which are noted in the PDF.

Morrissey makes a point I want to review. I’m putting my thoughts and figures together very quickly this afternoon, so maybe I’m totally off base … but stick with me.

The data does not show the residential status of the mothers at the time of the outcomes, but only that the outcomes took place in New York City.  It is entirely possible that significant numbers of women seeking abortions come to New York City to get them from outside of the city; in fact, it’s probably more likely than not, considering the concentration of abortion services in major metropolitan areas.

Morrissey may be referring to the note below table 4.10 on page 81, which notes the data specific to teenagers and includes all “events occurring in NYC regardless of residence.” But if you look at table 4.13 on page 85 the report specifically lists borough of residence, and has categories for none-residents and residence unknown. You can confirm this by comparing the numbers in tables 4.10 and 4.13.

Table 4.13 indicates 18,361 of the pregnancies registers were from non-residents or unknowns. The question … Does the report’s definition of borough of residence mean what we think it means? I take it to mean that is where the mother lives.

I’ll run the numbers with table 4.13, and exclude the non-residents and unknowns in the following calculations.

There were 116,752 live births in New York City in 2009. A total of 207,306 pregnancies were recorded. 10,719 were recorded as spontaneous terminations and 79,835 were recorded as induced terminations. Take the total, minus the spontaneous terminations and you have 79,835 babies aborted out of 196,587.

That’s 40.6 percent.

Here is a screen shot from page 85, please click to see the full size view. Note that I’m not showing the non-resident and unknowns in this image. In reality, removing those only changes the data by one-tenth of a percent.

The abortion rate for the 19 and under crowd is much worse. If you take a look at the data – again removing the non-residents and unknowns – 12,958 of the 21,232 pregnancies for those 19 and under were induced terminations … abortions.

That works out to 61 percent.

Morrissey sums up…

[Planned Parenthood] talks about comprehensive sex education as the key to reducing abortions, including abstinence education, but then asserts that “abstinence by itself is proven to be ineffective.”  Actually, abstinence by itself is the only completely effective way to avoid pregnancy.  She means abstinence education, but since we’ve been delivering comprehensive sex education for decades while abortion rates and unmarried pregnancies have skyrocketed, the same can be said for comprehensive sex education as well.

Sister Toldjah is also writing, and there have been a few threads over at Free Republic on this story … but not as much as I expected. New Yorker’s getting ready for the next storm?

Appalling.  I was thinking of this very topic while at the mall, during Christmas no less, where there was a big banner with "OMG GYN" (subtle, huh?)  and the Planned Parenthood logo underneath, with a message telling you how long you will have to wait for an ob gyn appointment at your doctor (several weeks), while PP will squeeze you in the same week!  What happened to the "joys" of Øbamacare, with no waiting?

Margaret Mead must be looking up with pride…

In spite of Planned Parenthood and school sex ed. programs, I'm amazed how few adults know anything about the whole Pandora's Box of STD's… Bacterial, fungal, viral, parasites, protozoa. The viral are most scary because they are forever! (Fo'Evah!- as Jim might say) Herpes 1 & 2, several or all of the Hepatitis A through E strains depending on what's going on in the bedroom, HIV, and HPV which can lead to anal, genital and oral cancers and warts. Hollywood has turned cigarette smoking into a taboo! But if they really wanted to save lives and prevent a lot of suffering (especially cancers in women), they'd stop glorifying bedroom scenes! Knowledge is King; or in this case, it's a very cold shower!

    Dims,

At first I thought you mistakenly typed Magaret Mead Instead of Margaret Sanger, so I did a little self educating. Perhaps both women are looking up with pride. At least one of them is looking up from hell.

Shocking numbers and look at how many abortions our tax dollars paid for. We should have a say in what our money is used for especially when you consider that Muslims have all kinds of rights when it comes to their money. What a country we have become.

Sadly, the stats for 2011 will be much higher as Obamacare pasess out Medicaid to millions more.

Knowing that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, it would seem logical that Planned Parenthood would make abstinence its mission.  An abortion is a wonderful cure for an unwanted pregnancy; but a woman would be lucky if she slept around and only got pregnant!  I guess abortion keeps the lights on and the money coming in???

And to think that the US decries the human rights abuses of other countries !!

Another resource   http://www.guttmacher.org/sections/abortion.php  inside which http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/fb_induced_abortio…  indicates that thirty-seven percent of women obtaining abortions identify as Protestant and 28% as Catholic.

Fine Christians eh !   Maybe a honesty and trust on both sides of a relationship would help.

We have alot of soul searching to do.

Now that the law says it's O.K., abortion seems to be more of the norm.  We must be careful what we ask for.

"In the absence of self control, we make laws to control everything else." unkown.
