Not The Onion, and a warning … your head may explode. School administrators in Grand Island, Neb. want the parents of a 3 year-old deaf child to change the sign for his name because signing his name violates the weapons policy of the school.
The most ridiculous thing I’ve read all week.
Hunter Spanjer says his name with a certain special hand gesture, but at just three and a half years old, he may have to change it.
“He’s deaf, and his name sign, they say, is a violation of their weapons policy,” explained Hunter’s father, Brian Spanjer.
Grand Island’s “Weapons in Schools” Board Policy 8470 forbids “any instrument…that looks like a weapon,” But a three year-old’s hands?
“Anybody that I have talked to thinks this is absolutely ridiculous. This is not threatening in any way,” said Hunter’s grandmother Janet Logue.
“It’s a symbol. It’s an actual sign, a registered sign, through S.E.E.,” Brian Spanjer said.
S.E.E. stands for Signing Exact English, Hunter’s sign language. Hunter’s name gesture is modified with crossed-fingers to show it is uniquely his own.
“We are working with the parents to come to the best solution we can for the child,” said Jack Sheard, Grand Island Public Schools spokesperson.
I can think of one hand gesture that the parents could use, but watch the video. These over-regulating bullies in the school administration are fruitcakes. They don’t seem to have any common sense what-so-ever.
I’m wondering if Windex® bottles are banned in these schools since they have “triggers.” (I’m serious … you think some school fruitcake would not try to ban them?)

If the local school board had any spine they’d get rid of of the dead wood that’s holding their schools back and instead start taking a real interest in the kids.

This malignant stupidity can only come from the indoctrination system known as public school. The diseased thinking responsible for such nonsense is also charged with the national task of brainwashing entire generations and this story is a glimpse into the type of values being impressed on young people-.. placing premiums on aggressive self-victimization because of nothing more than words- whether spoken or signed.
Considering that the values will be the basis of future social and political trends with majorities determining the role of future governments for example, the trillions in debt we’re leaving them may be the least of their worries.
