  1. Dimsdale says:

    On the bright side:

    1) with history looking over his shoulder, he can't afford to screw up. As the first (half) black president, he has a huge load to bear. Every move will be scrutinized far beyond what any other president has had to endure. He doesn't want to be the "first black president that screwed up America," or as far as he understands what screwing up the country means. That works in our favor.

    2) Perhaps now, the public will find out what we have been telling them about Obama, and the media hasn't.

On the not so good side: 1) I hope Biden was wrong, because Obama's response will be weak.

    2) I suspect the volunteer rate for the Army will go down, possibly precipitously. Now all those college students that got Obama in will have to worry, considering that only Democrats ever brought up the draft.

    3) He knows nothing about a capitalist economy, and Soros will make sure that stays that way (while he profits handsomely).

    4) Keep an eye on Ayers and Wright and Farrakhan.

If Republicans do not start figuring out what to do about this TODAY, they are toast. Maybe they deserve it. We'll see. Recruit and groom real conservatives. We will need them. Take back the schools and airwaves. Incrementally if necessary. As the Dems say: By any means necessary.

Me? I am too old and make too little to be on Obama's radar (I hope).

Now where is my check/tax cut/tax credit? ;-)

  2. Stephanie says:

Agreed. The Republicans MUST rediscover what made people flock to the likes of Ronald Reagan. Clearly being "moderate" is NOT the answer. The Republican party has lost their way. I am 35 and remember the gas lines of Jimmy Carter. I remember my parents being stressed about making it to the next paycheck during that time. But what I remember more was how the country felt when Reagan was elected. We have to find someone who has that same optimism in our country & believes it's the PEOPLE of our nation that make it great – not those in gov't. I hope that Obama does feel like he can't "screw up" b/c he's the 1st black president, the thing is that he truly believes that gov't IS the answer. Add to that the fact that he has no moral compass and I think we have a lot to be worried about. At this point we can only hope that he's a 1 term president and in the meantime the Republican party get their heads out of their rears. The Republican party has failed it's true base for too long now. They have left us.

  3. Gary the solicalist says:

Even now you still do not get it… So with that I have to say, is it to soon to wonder if you and your fellow quoters will by 2010?

  4. Dave in EH says:

In the meantime, our leaders will include men who can't handle percentages (Menendez), don't understand the difference between wealth and income (Moroney (sp?)), compare differing political views to pornography (Schumer), don't understand a sweetheart deal is a bribe (Dodd) and want to remake the economy, despite a demonstrable lack of understanding of the item in question and consider the Constitution a constraint on their aspirations (Obama).

  5. Gary the socialist says:

I'm done with the Republican Party locally and nationally. Not one thin dime will be sent until they realize Conservatism is the cure for liberalism.I'm dropping off our change of party forms at lunch time today.
I will remain an independent until Jim gets the "Connecticut Conservatarian Party" organized.I'm so happy Shay's got what was coming to him.He authored a new national Assualt Weapons Ban along with 5 OTHER RINO REPUBLICANS!The sad part is our country will need to go thru some terrible times for people to see what liberalism really is.
I don't wish harm on any of my liberal countrymen but I fear its coming for all of us.Iran,Russia,Hezbolah have a new mandate from the American people.

  7. Barb says:

I agree with all the previous comments; hard to add to anything already said. Education is key. Since we can't get past the MSM, we need to find other ways to reach the uneducated masses, sheeple who don't take the time to learn about the issues or the man, but vote on "feelings."
We can't let this country stampede toward socialism, nor can we allow the Soroses and the Ayers of the world to maintain the hold in the White House they have now achieved.
These can be scary times, but they can also motivate us to find ways to educate, get our voices heard, fight the good fight going forward, spread the word that Capitalism means freedom, and it works every time it's tried.

  8. Dimsdale says:

Simple things Obama can do to quickly destroy our economy:

    1) sign the Kyoto agreement or something like it
    2) follow through with his coal industry destroying cap and trade system
    3) stop any progress in utilizing our own resources that actually produce reliable energy.

    More long term:

    1) make our tax system more "progressive" (analogous to unfair to people with brains)
    2) take testing out of our schools and replace them with feel good pablum, letting the rest of the world's children leap past ours
    3) putting more nutcases on the Supreme Court

    Way out there:

    1) reparations
    2) Marxism 101 and taking the constraints of the government out of the Constitution via legislation
    3) applying "affirmative action" to his appointments, rather than getting the best person

  9. Dimsdale says:

If the Republicans are not having meetings TODAY, they are already on a path to losing more seats and more elections.

    Let us observe.

  10. Dimsdale says:

Jim: please burn a few DVDs for those upcoming "I told you so" moments.

We will need them. And people forget….

  11. Dave in EH says:

Two quotes that seem to fit the day…

It is inaccurate to say that I hate everything. I am strongly in favor of common sense, common honesty, and common decency. This makes me forever ineligible for public office.
    H. L. Mencken

It is not materialism that is the chief curse of the world, as pastors teach, but idealism. Men get into trouble by taking their visions and hallucinations too seriously.
    H. L. Mencken

And one that fits my mood…

Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.
    H. L. Mencken

  12. shiningcityonahill says:

Well said all. I do need to say this….(and forgive me for being sappy). There was such desperation all over the conservative blogosphere last night. Warranted or not, it pains me immensely to see so many good people in such despair. Even in this darkness there is hope (and not the Obama kind). It is up to each of us to pick up the flag where it has fallen and continue to march on. There is a day tomorrow, and a brighter future for America if we each commit to carry Reagan's torch. The obstacles to conservatism's victory may be greater than ever but so should our resolve be to ensure that the ideals that are so dear to us are not extinguished. You can see the results of this election as just defeat or you can see that defeat as an opportunity or better yet, a challenge. A really big one. It is time for renewal. It is time for the party of Reagan to return to its roots. It is a winning message, a right and good philosophy. The message-bearer has failed – not the message. I seem to remember a story about an exceptional group of people a couple of hundred years ago who risked their very lives and livelihoods for these same ideals. At many points the cause seemed hopeless. They trudged through the darkness and emerged victorious, as will we. God Bless….don't despair. This is America after all.

  13. Steve says:

Well…America finally get's it. A President who will finally give the middle class a break. All of JIm V's (Mr. Rush Limbaugh Wannabe) twisted distortions of comments made by Barack and Biden and other Democrats made to appear to mean something else completely different, wasn't believed by a a voting public that is much brighter then he gives them credit to be. Three reasons why the best candidate was chosen:
    1. George Bush
    2. Economy
    3. Sarah Palin (totally unprepared and even the members of her own party didn't like her or the selection)
Of course, I could add more like an unecessary war, big oil, lack of healthcare, declining education achievements, destruction of the "green" policies put in place by the Clinton admin, unemployment rate, inflation, failure to follow thru on alternative fuel technology, etc. Ugh! I guess I'll stop there for now. I could keep going but hey, why rub it in.
The voters of America get it. They are fed up with the current admin. A new era is upon us. Finally! Stick that in your cap

  14. Dave in EH says:

I do not fear despair, Shiningcity… I feel a cold fury, the feeling a soldier would have when he realizes he has been guided by incompetents.

The Republican leadership is going to blow this opportunity, too. They are going to try to say all the right things, but they aren't going to mean them — their time in the majority under Bush is evidence of that. I think we need to scrape things down to the nape and start over.

  15. Kelly in Plainville says:

    shiningcityonahill-
Well said. I keep fighting this feeling of sadness today, I will fight it. Hopefully this is the kick in the pants that conservatives need to make our voices heard again. This should give us the determination to stand up and be heard and breath new life and strength into the moral fiber of this country of ours. Our core values are those that strenghten family and country. It is our responsibility to get more involved and to make a difference. I pray God will have mercy on us and protect us in these uncertain times.

  16. joe says:

How about some BUS13 off the new record??
    Luv ya Jim!!!

  17. Mary says:

Where was the John McCain that we heard last night? He was serious, sincere and heartfelt. It was such a contrast to his cynical and often flip presentation during the campaign. His honesty, maturity, heroism and intelligence were all overpowered by the "finger quotes," time wasting finger pointing and his choice of Sarah Palin for a running mate. The competent females in the Republican party often spoke eloquently on his behave to the many pundits during the campaign. If only he took a little more time to look around, the outcome of this election might have been quite different.

  18. Dave in EH says:

What part of "bankrupting the coal industry" and "hiking electricity costs" were distorted, Steve?

What part of "spreading the wealth" was distorted.

  19. Steve says:

What part of “spreading the wealth” was distorted?

You are joking I hope. How about the part where Jim and the Republicans in general have been equating the "spreading the wealth" comment (which by the way, was totally taken out of context and twisted yet again, as is Jim's style, to mean something totally then what the comment truly meant) and equating it to socialism. First, giving the middle class a tax break is hardly spreading the wealth. The middle class has been carrying the tax burden of this country for too many years and now it's time to "spread the burden" or what you refer to as "the wealth", to the uppper class. And there's a good reason to do that…because their RICH!!!! And therefore, are more then capable of a tax increase. The middle class has born the brunt of taxes for too long. Now it's time to let them hold onto some of their wealth and perhaps save some and spend some which in turn, helps the economy. This is a far cry from "spreading the wealth" in what Jim's twisted explanation meant taking money from the Rich and giving it to the Poor. It's more like allowing the middle and lower classes to keep what little wealth they may have. Of course, Jim doesn't stop there, he carries it to the next level with comparisons to Socialism. Perhaps Jim should go back to school and read up on exactly what a socialist economy and society is like. Obamas plans to put this economy back on track after the train wreck our current President and his administration has created, is light years away from Socialism. What a joke! And a bad one at that. Typical Jim. Take something Obama said, twist it to mean something else, exaggerate it to appeal to the conservatives and push it off on the listeners (or readers) as fact. Well the voters have spoken. They, like I, don't buy into his twisted charades.
And perhaps if the Republicans were serious about alternative fuel technologies, we wouldn't need to worry about "hiking electricity costs" which cannot be blamed on Obama nor will he be bankrupting the coal industry. But why would the Republicans be interested in alternative fuel technologies when they are in neck deep with Big Oil.
The voters know where the blame lies and it's with Bush and his administration.

But hey, there is some good that comes out of the McCain/Palin ticket losing. Sarah can go back to Alaska and push forth her husbands efforts to have Alaska cecede from the US.

  20. Dimsdale says:

Well, well, Steve. Let's address your diatribe one point at a time, shall we?

    1) Quotes are not "distortions" nor "distractions" (if you are the one making them.

    2) How can the voting public believe quotes that never made it to major media outlets, or were buried by them?

    3) George Bush. Too much handwringing on the part of Democrats. Like him or not, he pulled the country together after 9/11, his tax cuts prevented a crash after 9/11, and his policies prevented another 9/11. 'nuff said. Hope it continues.

    4) The economy. Doing just fine until the mortgage bubble burst (inevitable) and people that shouldn't have had houses in the first place got turned upside down. Note: the Bush administration tried to get more oversight and reforms for Fannie and Freddie back in 2001 (IIRC) and on several separate occasions after that. The Democrats (Frank and Dodd to name a few) resisted said reforms and KA BOOM! To be sure, Republicans let it go too long prior to that, but it was a retirement and enrichment camp for Democrats, not Republicans. You know this, but the "voting public" weren't entertained with any of the facts. Once again.

    5) Sarah Palin. Every attack on her experience simply demonstrates the complete lack of experience of Obama himself. As governor of Alaska, she had more hands on executive experience than any of the candidates, particularly Obama. Maybe you should review some of her later interviews and press conferences that, you guessed it, weren't reported in any significant way. If she were a Dem, you would have been worshiping at her feet. I mean really, do you think that she is inferior to many fine Dem female politicians? Do you need a list?

    6) Unnecessary war? History will decide that. Consider for a moment a hostile Iran sandwiched between two America friendly Muslim countries. Maybe he is smarter than you give him credit for (surprise).

    7) Big oil? What is your issue? The fact that the federal government makes twice as much per gallon as the "big oil" companies after costs? And don't forget the state taxes. You have a problem with price? Try drilling domestically (before the ChiComs do it for you).
    8) Lack of healthcare. By law, if you go into a hospital, they have to treat you (unless it is Michelle Obama's hospital that sends away the poor). Add to that the millions of illegals overburdening the system, which all the candidates were courting. Go to Canada or Great Britain and ask them what they think of the system Obama is foisting on us. Get back to us.

    9) Declining education achievements. That is all about the liberals, who have dominated, then decimated the system. Feel good policies taking the place of the basics. No economic training. No real math and science courses. Testing considered too "traumatic" to their little psyches. NCLB was a band aid on a huge liberal social experiment gone wrong. Don't blame Bush or the Republicans for that.

    10) Green policies of the Clinton admin? Which ones, the Kyoto that Clinton never signed or pushed? What? Tell us.

    11) Unemployment rate. Up to recently, the lowest of the industrialized nations. Check out those socialist (liberal) countries and see their rates. See also the Democrat's Freddie and Fannie debacle.

    12) Inflation. As above.

    13) Alternative fuel tech? Go ahead. Who is stopping you? If private industry saw a profitable enterprise there, it would be in existence now. How about nuclear? How about not burning our food for fuel? How about developing the resources we have until those immature technologies are perfected (or rejected as undoable)? How about not screwing our economy in pursuit of your alternatives? Nobody wins then.

    14) You forgot Social "Security." I bet you can't wait to cash that check, huh? Don't expect any reforms, and don't expect any payout either. The whole Democrat "invest in the market" crap either. The plan Bush proposed already exists, and quite successfully: the Federal Employee Thrift Savings Plan. I think it is http://www.tsp.gov. Go look it up. Then compare it to the crappy Ponzi scheme they tell us we should be swallowing. Yeah, thanks a lot.

Yeah, there is a change coming, but the word "change" requires a modifier, and it can be positive or negative. I hope your optimism is well founded. For all of our sakes.

    Steve
I find it funny that you complain about statements being taken out of contex and then you say the following:
Sarah can go back to Alaska and push forth her husbands efforts to have Alaska cecede from the US.
When has Sarah Palin ever said Alaska should cecede from the US?

    God Bless
    Sal C

"First, giving the middle class a tax break is hardly spreading the wealth. The middle class has been carrying the tax burden of this country for too many years and now it’s time to “spread the burden” or what you refer to as “the wealth”, to the uppper class."

Then you should espouse taxing wealth, not income. Tell me when you get Soros, Kerry, Gore, Pelosi etc. Let me know when they are making as much as I am, and I will listen.

How come you don't mention the punitive tax rates of Carter, which practically destroyed this country? How about the proven principles of the Laffer curve?

Bush gave me more in tax releif than any Democrat president ever did, and now Obama plans to reverse that. Will it offset his "promised" tax cuts? Who knows? Nobody else seems to be able to follow the target on his shifting plans. Let us know when you do, and you can explain it to us (and Cavuto and Menendez).

If you don't "buy into Jim's twisted charades," then what are you doing here? Do you think you have to explain things to us? Are you trying to convince us? If you don't like it, go visit another site. I recommend Kos, or DU. They will welcome you as a brother.

Take yes for an answer! You won! Why are you here trying to convince the minority? One man's "progressive" is another man's "Marxist." Accept that. Go enjoy the fruits of your victory.

I hope the rest of us can.

Oh, and if you review the video, Obama specifically said, and with some satisfaction, that his cap and trade system would necessarily bankrupt anyone who wanted to build a coal burning plant. Listen and weep.

Steve, your lack of grasp of the facts is staggering. The ratios for income taxes are below, for the most recent year I can find.

The top 1% already bats far above their weight, paying just shy of 40% of the income tax burden.

The top 5% supply shoulder just shy of 60% of that burden

The top 10%? Just over 70%.

How asymptotic do you think the curve should be, Steve? Or did you think that this information was unavailable and that you could simply bluff your way through with bluster and sneer?

As for other items, it is interesting that payroll taxes migrate from "taxes" to "contributions" when liberals was to un-cap them or raise the rate of "contribution."
