I am glad Politico caught this because frankly, I had seen enough of the President for one week.
“You’re sitting here. And you’re— you are laughing. You are laughing about some of these problems. Are people going to look at this and say, ‘I mean, he’s sitting there just making jokes about money—’ How do you deal with— I mean: explain. . .” Kroft asked at one point.
Update: CBS has finally unloaded the interview to You Tube so it will now be much easier to find and follow, I think. But actually as you watch tonight’s 60 minutes segment three things stand out for me.
The first comes at the 7:30 minute mark. Just click along the bottom about midway through. Obama tells Kroft that executive and Wall Street salaries are out of whack with the rest of world (not counting him and his book deals I think) … and uses the very tired teachers pay vs executive pay example. Why it’s always teachers I have never figured out. He could have used talk show hosts(less Rush) or reporters but it is classic Obama class warfare. Hey, he says to Kroft, many people in the midwest would be happy to be making even $75,000, Wall Streeters. So get used to it. Swell talk coming from the guy who was going to be everyone’s President.
The second bite comes after Obama spends the interview laughing his way though questions on the economy and the war on terror or whatever he calls it now. Jump to 13:10. Kroft to Obama,”You punch drunk?”
The last bite comes at 17:30 where Obama takes a counter whack at VP Cheney who last week told CNN President Obama’s decision to close GITMO made America less safe. Obama counters by saying the Bush administration never convicted any of the terrorists at GITMO, thus Bush did not make us safe either or something like that. The young President kinda lost me on this one, which is easy to do when he’s not on TelePrompTer. Presumably we are to ignore 9/11, the plots the Feds busted up since 9/11, and the fact that we have not been attacked. I think. But then again I like it when we treat terrorists like terrorists.
