I am a Jim Calhoun fan, more now than ever before.
You want to take issue with the way he spoke to the reporter, go ahead, I don’t, but a fair debate. But as I learned a long time ago about business .. you are either making me money or saving me money … and if you aren’t doing either , then your job’s in jeopardy.
Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun got into a heated exchange at a post-game news conference Saturday with a freelance journalist and political activist who questioned why the coach of a public university was making $1.6 million in tough economic times.
“Not a dime back,” Calhoun joked as Ken Krayeske asked about Calhoun’s salary and the state’s budget deficit, which is estimated at $944 million for the current fiscal year and up to $8 billion over the next two years.
When Krayeske continued the line of questioning, Calhoun got angry.
This took place Saturday after the Huskies beat USF.
Calhoun makes the state money … a lot of money. In fact, he is one of the few state employees that actually generate revenue. Most of the rest provide us with services that in some cases are necessary and in many cases not. As for legislators they manage and spend our money.
But Calhoun makes money. I am a Jim Calhoun fan.

State employees are being asked to make concessions, state union memebers are being asked to make concessions, every department is being asked to trim spending, departments are being eliminated, State Universites are increasing tuitions to the highest percentage of the overall education costs ever. When the highest paid State UniversityEmployee is asked if he will give back a piece of his income, to share with every other State Employee, Calhoun yells at the questioner to SHUT UP.

Does it matter who's fault it was for the financial crisis in the state now? Or just how to fix it. I think it was a legitimate question. He is after all a STATE employee, he knew this when he took the job. I think Calhoun has done a great job, but in time of state financial crisis a pay cut is a reasonable question for the highest paid employee. He sounds as if HE is responsible for additional 12 mill. coming in to the college. Last I checked Calhoun hasn't made a shot in years. His players don't get any $, they just generate all the $. Many of the CEO's are taking pay cuts now and they generate billions for their companies. I think it is reasonable to ask him if he has considered a pay cut (of TAX payers $) since he makes so much off other deals anyway.
